Comments on Cool Car

It is a cool car, but it cost about a dollar in gas just to start it.

This looks like a '57 Olds, which got about 20mpg.

20 mpg. coasting. downhill. with no passengers or luggage.

The person who owns it probably doesn't put more than 50 miles on it per year. Cut him some slack. He's driving a piece of art.

It's a 1955 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 (just like the one Ike Turner used to sing about) and they get about 11 mpg from everything I've read.

Oil paints, photography developing chemicals, and any number of products and processes are, in and of themselves, hard on the environment. But we still do--and should--create and display them. Same goes for the Olds. Beautiful car...

1957 was the nadir of American car design. Maybe not really, but it became so the day all the Elvis-lovin' boomers decided to make it theirs. So tiresome. At least it's not a Chevy.

1963 Mercury Meteor. Now there's a big piece of American iron. Lincoln Continental. If you don't like them that big, how about a 1960 Plymouth Valiant? Or go overseas for a gorgeous Volvo 1800, or my own favorites, the Hillman Imp, the Fiat 500, and the finest motor vehicles ever manufactured, the Velam Isetta (much lovelier than the BMW one).

And cars ARE art! Rolling art. Some more than others. My view is that anything that someone designed the look of should be considered art. That's pretty much everything right down to the ugly office chair we sit in.

Soooo, now we're going to kvetch about the fact that a 50+ year-old car, that's still on the road and not taking up space in a junk yard or landfill, only gets roughly the same MPG as a brand-new Hummer II?

The Volvo P1800 is beautiful! Basically the early to mid sixties through the early 70's are the cars I love the most.

I think 1967 gave us the most beautiful cars ever.

My first car, in 1982, was a 1956 Olds with a Rocket 88. OH man I loved that car--it was like driving a living room down the highway. I always meant to put a fringy lamp in the back seat... OH speaking of back seat--it was HUGE! I once took a bunch of friend to the drive-in on 10-bucks-a-load night, seven sat in the back seat and six in the front and it was comfy for all. I hope the guy who had it after me kept it going.

And this shows that your loathing of cars is not "irrational" just how exactly? If there's some rational reason for why you think this car is cool where others are not, you've neglected to share it with us.

I think you may be right Doug. I was going by the grill but I think picture I was looking at might have been mislabeled. 57 would fit with the chrome side trim as well.

I love seeing that car... I live just a couple blocks from where that photo was taken, and I smile every time I see that car.

Classic cars like this one are almost never used as a primary mode of transportation. Why the sarcasm? Is it so wrong for a person to occasionally drive something like this? Sure it's gas milage may be "wasteful" compared to today's compact cars, but aren't people allowed a little bit of joy in their lives?
If I recall, you and your boyfriend enjoy going to Mariners games. In the age of inflated player salaries, some people may see buying a ticket to a pro sports event as "wasteful". We all have our pastimes, lay off dude.

You know, despite the gas problems with those old cars; the LOOK of older US made cars were damn right sexy. Just goes to show you America used to make attractive cars.......even if the emissions killed all the trees in the neighborhood.
