TV Best Super Bowl Commercial of the Year!
posted by February 5 at 9:59 AM
onIt was a pretty underwhelming year for Super Bowl commercials in general—but here was one I LOVED. Anything that so successfully parodies homophobia during the most macho shithead game of the year is okay by me! (See any other commercials you liked or especially despised? Comment on them below, and we’ll post some more later!)
BTW! I’ve got a piece running online at MSNBC.com today where I take some pokes at the top ten Super Bowl commercials (and the washed up celebrities who could have made them better)! Check it out here!

I'll never eat a Snickers bar again.
BTW, worst crop of Superbowl ads ever. There's no longer *any* reason to watch the game...
Unfortunately, while the ad isn't so offensive, the players' reactions on the Snickers site are a different story.
Snickers Super Bowl: "Quick, Do Something Manly"
Snickers Superbowl Web site promotes violence against gays and lesbians.
That shit was hilarious!
Dirk's got a good point ... the commercial was good, but the website crosses from a parody of homophobia into a celebration of it.
Or! Maybe, by putting the homophobic football players on the website, Snickers is holding them up for ridicule, comparing them to the idiot characters in the commercial? Maybe it's actually multitextual and SELF-parodying.
Yeah, that seems likely.
Interesting. A writer on salon.com thinks the ad is actually homophobic:

Reminds me of those old Joe Gage movies from the late 70's/early 80's. Rrrrooowwwrrr!
Yeah, it actually strikes me as homophobic.
I enjoyed "Beard Combover".
Maybe it's just me, but I read those ads as poking fun at homophobia rather than celebrating it. I mean, these guys are doing stupid things in the name of not being seen as guy - they come off as idiots.
err, guy=gay
Aravosis over at Americablog is calling it promotion of violence against gays and calling for a boycott. Can't we all just get along?

Sorry, while I despise homophobia, there is no way in hell I'm boycotting Snickers. I love that peanutty caramelly delight! (And have you tried the Snickers "Popables"? I ate three bags at the movies the other night!)
Did somebody really just say "celebrate homophobia"?
My favorite commercial, BY FAR, was the one where George W. Bush takes a big shit, then picks it and cradles it like a baby, and then makes violent love to it. That was so cool, I went out and immediately bought ten! One for each of my neighbors!
Ummm...did anyone else wonder why snickers would consider pulling out chest hair "something manly"? Did mutual mastrabation take too long for a 30-second spot?
In case you haven't noticed, this is one of the primary categories of commercials these days: "Stupid guys hurting themselves or others". They are not celebrating homophobia or combating it; they are celebrating the stupidity of men. To the degree that anyone gives a shit about commercials, this abuse is agreed-upon by men in the hopes that it will deliver them from the onus of responsibility and get them some pussy even when they're being jerks.
Technically, it's classic homophobia, as the two men are, in fact, terrified of having possibly performed a homosexual act. That's about as close as stereotypical doods can get to acknowledging it. This is a dialogue that takes place entirely inside the mind of confessed idiots; the potential harm to society comes when these idiots are encouraged to believe that idiocy is normal.
PS: my favorite ad was the very expensive CGI ad showing FedEx delivering to a settlement on the moon, which showed lunar weightlessness -- the guy who was hit in the chest started to float away. Idiots. The moon has gravity.
I think Budweiser is going to lead the polls for the best commercial again this year. However, there were a few more contenders this year; in particular I like the robot from General Motors.
See for yourself, Super Bowl Commercial Poll: http://todayspolls.googlepages.com/superbowl_commercials
By far these were the worst Super Bowl ads ever. This Snickers/gay scat play commercial was wretched. No-gravity moon was dumb. Oh look, a robot committing suicide. Oh just a dream, it still is on the assembly line and Ron the Riveter is in the unemployment line.
I liked your msnbc post, though.
I'm not easily offended. I found the Snickers commercial one of the few funny ads.
The website, however, crosses the line - of humor. With the homophobic reactions of the football players, as well as the alternate endings (drinking anti freeze? hitting the guy he just kissed with a wrench?). That's disappointing.
Boycott Snickers? Probably not...
They are feeling the pressure...they just took down the videos from their web site.
yes, yes, AND OH YES!
What about the Chevy commercial where all the guys get naked and wash the ladies' car?
GET A LIFE!!!
The commercial was the best of the bunch...hilarious! I didn't see the whole site before it went down, but I read about it and saw some stills and it sound HILARIOUS!!!
BTW,
CLAUSTRO-PHOBIA = FEAR of tight places.
ACRO-PHOBIA = FEAR of flying.
A PHOBIA is a FEAR of something. HOMOPHOBIA would mean that I'm afaid of it, I'm not afraid of it I just think it's wrong and unnatural.
BIG DIFFERENCE.
The ad (as shown) was funny, but the reactions of the NFL players was sad and pathetic. I'm tossing my Milky Way Darks. (BTW, I'm straight.)
Humor is humor. But when a commercial promotes discrimination, the humor suddenenly looses it's value.
And by the way Bryan, since felt the need to put us all straight (no pun intended) and explain the true meaning of homophobia, I thought I'd point something out to you.
You seem concerned with homosexuality as being unnatural and wrong. Do you also consider discrimination against blacks or women unnatural and wrong? Don't forget that we were in the same position within the last century, with people who thought that women having a voice in politics, or black Americans having the right to eat beside the whites was unnatural and wrong.
Bryan, besides being homophobic or whatever you want to call it, are you also rasist and sexist?
