Yeah, Sean. He sure seems like an asshole.

I’m sending him a check.

This a good.
Smart. Honest. Articulate. Principled. And, yes, funny.

I'm not a troll, but yeah, he does come across as an asshole here. Also a total fucking phony.

His writing is funny, though.

I agree with his politics and hope more people like him come to power, but no doubt does he suffer from Naderistic Narcissism. He's a douchebag and almost unwatchable with his smirkies and winkies in this awful video.

Never mind all that, I'd only seen the first minute of the video when I left that comment.

He needs to chill the fuck out and speak the trufe like he did in the last three quarters of the video, when he forgot to mug for the camera. If he acts like a ham, no one will ever trust him.

Asshole? No.
Suddenly boring? Yes.

I love Al Franken. I hope he can win.

Al's got a tough gig. He's been a comedian his whole career and he wants people to think of him as a senator. That's really hard.

I liked the video and thought he did a nice job. However, Al can't help that he has a Joker smile and I could see him trying to sort of 'look serious' as he spoke. I can't wait until he uses his humor to skewer the crap out of Coleman.

are you people kidding me? Norm Coleman needs to bend over and kiss his ass goodbye - Franken has mastered the carrier of "this I believe" - he'll slay Coleman in a general with this message.

It's funny how "Sean Nelson" in another thread and "sniggles" above think narcissism is an unseemly characteristic in a US Senator. The only sitting Senator who did NOT get up this morning, look at themself in the mirror and get fully aroused by the prospect of their own power is Tim Johnson. (But even he'll be back!)

Yeah, Al Franken likes to hear himself talk, but that's because he's smarter than you and funnier than you. He'll be a great Senator.

Yay! It's about time.

I thought it was a good speech. I also liked the inside-joke reference to his annoucement speech in Why Not Me?

"They told me that they’re sick of politics as usual—and they're sick of the usual politicians."
vs.
"[L]et them know that politics as usual will only get you politicians as usual."

dan,

no doubt, he definitely comes off well here in his campaign video. he's a skilled actor with good writers and i think your money will serve him well. and maybe he's the real thing. that would be great. i'd be really happy to admit that i just have some weird irrational bias against his being taken seriously because i don't think he's serious and resent the way he plays the serious liberal. he'll for sure better than the other guy. i just think it's a drag that that's the best anyone can ask for or even want now. i don't feel loyal to the party. and i still think you should see the documentary that shows him in action on the campaign trail for kerry and entertaining the troops in iraq.

I thought he was quite good here, but he has a problem of occasionally coming across as a total asshole. Hope that doesn't trip him up, as he'd make a good senator if he wins.

Being an asshole is a prerequisite to running for office. I thought this was common knowledge.

Since when does being a comedian mean not taking things seriously? Do you think Dan doesn't take parenting seriously? You can tell he does even though he jokes about it. Comedy is an affective way to disarm to really get the point across.

I'll send him a check.

Actually, I watched it again, and he definitely says all the right things. I stand down.
