If guys couldn't get hard while drunk, half the people I know would never get laid.

um the cops didn't do a damn thing about charles stuart. (i am from the east coast and left boston in 1986 to move to new york, but this was an extremly sensitive and widely publicized fiasco when it happened and i remember the case vividly).

his family turned him in. cops instead harassed and arrested just about every black man in boston based on stuart stating a black man had done it. BAD EXAMPLE. read the link you provided - no suspicious cops figured stuart out.

in fact, in an attempt to heal some of the racial hatred and abuse this situation created - the murdered woman's family created a scholarship foundation to aid one of the neighborhoods where so many lives were disrupted by the boston police racially profiling the young, black men of the neighborhood.
from the link you provided:
In Carol Stuart's memory, her family established the Carol DiMaiti Stuart Foundation to provide scholarship aid to Mission Hill residents. By early 2006, the foundation had awarded $1.2 million to 220 students

i am not a cop basher - some cops are good and some are bad and the bad ones get way more press.

This comment thread has gotten a bit (or a lot) intense. I think the problem is that this is a very personal topic for a lot of people. Certainly anyone who's been raped or sexually assaulted, or has had it happen to someone they love, will find it difficult to keep a level head in this sort of discussion. It's hard to have an objective, fact-based debate about something that brings up a whirlwind of emotions. That is, in fact, the exact reason I hadn't been posting, since I really don't think I can be rational about this. I've written and deleted this post about 5 times, trying to figure out what I want to say. That being said (and at the risk of getting my head torn off), here are a couple points I wanted to address:

1. When I read the original post about the article, I didn't get the sense it was talking about girls who just got drunk and had some sloppy sex. It seems to me that if you think you've been given a date-rape drug (and I'm assuming for the sake of argument that they do think that, and aren't lying) you weren't just drunk. You probably would have been black-out drunk or passed out. I'm basing this on the fact that peole who have been given date rape drugs generally don't remember anything, they just wake up and realize they've been raped. If they were passed out, that was definitely rape. Also, when I've seen people who were blackout drunk they were GONE. Raving, thinking they were movie characters, trying to run into traffic, etc. Nobody who sees that would think, hey, they probably know what they're doing. So, if you have sex with them anyway, that's also definitely rape. And yes, getting that drunk is irresponsible. They shouldn't do it. And no, that doesn't make it their fault. They've been raped. Period.

2. To the woman who posted about her "personal statistics" (1 in 4 people she knew, I think) YES...you took the words out of my mouth.

3. To anyone who thinks men don't target women and get them drunk so they can rape them: they do. Often. They find women who are already drunk, or who are sad, or who look uncomfortable. They make nice, they act like the safe big brother type, and then they attack them. This is not a myth. They are social predators, and they are very real. I know from personal experience on that one. And again, no, women shouldn't trust them. But being naive, drunk, or disoriente; hell even being stupid, is not a crime. Raping someone is. Don't make these women feel even more helpless and culpable, please.

OK, enough rambling from me. Feel free to tear my arguments to shreds.

yes, they are very real. and they are very bad.

honest question: should i not get drunk and try to hook up at all then? i never force myself on anyone, and no in the least means no in the most. but i mean, there are those out there who do want to just hook up for a night. and if we both are drunk but still functional and consenting... i don't know... that seems perfectly okay. but there are many people here who seem to be saying that such a situation is not okay.
