I read the original New Yorker essay too, and you're right, it's incredibly beautiful and moving.
Thanks for pointing this out! I've actually never (gasp) heard of this before and now I'm looking forward to reading his book and essay.
I can't wait. Trillin's a fantastic essayist, and Alice was his muse (position jointly held with his stomach), and much more besides.
He did a reading here in New York night before last at a lil' bookstore in Chelsea, and it was absolutely wonderful.
