Celebrity Open Mic Night
(OPENNESS)
Comedians in Seattle do much of their grunt work in the basement of a bar in Pioneer Square at the legendary Comedy Underground. We pay tribute to our home with this open mic night (that happens every Sunday anyway) featuring Saba from Blue Scholars and The Stranger’s Charles Mudede, David Schmader, and Cienna Madrid. Showgirls and “pregnant sex” may be discussed. Open to public: Sign up at 7:30 p.m. (Comedy Underground, 222 S Main St, 628-0303. 8:30 pm, $6, all ages.) HARI KONDABOLU

Cienna's firey love story was incredible.

Seconded. Cienna's story was one of the night's high points.

I love David Schmader, but I was confused by what he read - it came from a book titled "Best Gay Erotica" or something like that, yet it was decidedly unsexy. I was also disappointed in the lack of Showgirls references.

Glad to have gone, though. Six dollars well spent.

I thought Schmader was charming! Why did you want to hear sexy gay erotica in the comedy club?

Oh no, I didn't mean that he wasn't charming, or that I didn't like his "set," or what have you. I would have liked it to be longer, actually- at least as long as that long haired dude, or the stool-moving guy. David Schmader is one of my favorites at the Stranger, and it was his presence that sold me on going.

It's not that I wanted to hear sexy gay erotica at a comedy club, I was just confused as to why what he was reading was printed in a gay erotica book. Perhaps it was commentary interspersed with erotica, and the sexiness was contained in the portions he skipped over.

Hi! Aislinn: You're right, it's really weird that what I read was printed in an erotica book. It was a comedy piece that I originally wrote for The Stranger and jokingly submitted to Best Gay Erotica in 1997, and to my surprise, they accepted it. Now, my complimentary copy of Best Gay Erotica 1997 is the only place I have the text of this piece, which is why I was standing up there reading unsexy gay erotica from a book.

Clearly, I should have been more explicit about the basic weird facts of my unsexy gay erotica writing career....but it was so late! And you all had already listened to so much!

But you're right: Cienna's piece is a fucking gut-buster, and FYI, I gushed all about her—and DJ Sabzi—today in Line Out.
