Barrington Levy (Real Reggae) Barrington Levy, AKA "The Mellow Canary," has to his credit the reggae song "Shine Eye Gal." Now, I know you're thinking: "Black Uhuru also has a song by that name." You are right, they do. But Black Uhuru's version is about a Rasta dealing with a woman whose beauty ("shine eye") "is a trouble to a man." She is a Rasta corruptor. Levy's version is also about a beautiful woman, but instead of criticizing the "shine eye gal," who desires worldly things (cars, champagne, diamonds), he presents her with the ultimate human question: "What do...

The Barrington Levy show was wonderful, but what is puzzling to me is the fact that I was likely one of 10 African American women attending the show. What was even stranger but typical were the White boys making such a point out of giving high fives to any Black male (there were not many of them either) at the show. And on a different note, when I read "From Slog: Condescending Liberal" I was actually saddened and angered that alternative transit options were compared to "including Maya Angelou on a list of top 10 all time American Authors" and especially affirmative action. Please try and be more aware of the impact that this could have upon readers and that your mention of it in this context reinforces the racist assumptions about affirmative action. Now I know The Stranger attempts to be witty and intelligent but really much of any racial discourse or mention from the stranger comes off as White Privilege-but trying-to-be liberal Sentiment. Welcome to Seattle, I guess.
