Slog - Comments on Today in Stranger Suggests

Matthew Stadler is talking to Steve Scher on KUOW right now. Will somebody please call in and ask how he got his hair to do this? Matthew Stadler (LECTURE) Matthew Stadler brings the concept of "Zwischenstadt" to Seattle. The concept calls for a new interpretation and reorientation of urban space. Stadler believes that the old concept, the city center, is only adequate for a kind of urban space that no longer exists; the new concept, Zwischenstadt, is adequate for the new realities of centerless and globalized urban space. But that is just the surface of the matter. Expect to hear...

The discussion between James Howard Kunstler and Stadler was facinating. I wish it weren't the extremely rare exception that something as vital and fundamental to all our lives were discussed in the media (present company excepted of course). I wish I were able to make the lecture tonight.

DWB--

I totally agree. I wish Kunstler was going to the lecture tonight so they could continue the debate. I like Stadler (and I really like his hair), but his ideas can stifle a little in a vacuum. I mean, he rides the light rail from Portland to Beaverton? That doesn't say anything about the mobility of non-car-owning Beaverton residents. All they can do is go back and forth between Beaverton and downtown PDX, whereas Stadler, as a center city resident, can move in multidirectional spokes.

Comment by Grant Cogswell

I love Stadler, the man, the talent and now the hair, but disagree with his love for the Zweichenstadt. Recently we were talking on email and he claimed my new adopted home, Mexico City, was the perfect Zstadt, but Mexico City does not follow any prescription that would happen in the US until the oil runs out - car ownership is less than 10%. The seeming random scatter of its layout works because the city is comprised of thousands of Kuntsler-type (Kuntsdats?) pedestrian districts. (And still, the traffic, what there is of it, is monstrous. The "solution" to this would NOT be building a bunch of highways.) In D.F., the sidewalk itself is a bazaar. The immediate reaction on returning to an allegedly dense American core like Capitol Hill is, where are all the people?

But damn, that hair is awesome!
