But when you start with something gouge-your-own-eyes-out horrible like Garfield, it's not hard to make a huge improvement. A plain, opaque, white rectangle -- sized to neatly cover the complete strip and glued in place -- would improve Garfield. In the entire history of newspaper funnies, has an established strip ever been cancelled because it sucks? It seems like maybe it is not possible for a comic strip artist to suck so bad he gets cancelled.

Probably the population of Slog commenters is not the same population as reads the morning funnies, but for those of you who do -- what comic strip makes you want to gouge YOUR eyes out?

Not to obsess about the thoughtless Garfield, but the cartoons you can see via the link are all dramatically improved from the originals. The cat's exaggerated expressions are actually kind of amusing. The strips make sense. Jon becomes a (sort of) loveable neurotic, instead of a complete idiot. Someone should do a book.
