Slog - Comments on The State of the Union

Tomorrow night during Bush's second-to-last State of the Union address—worth watching just to see Nancy Pelosi sitting behind Bush throughout the speech—I'll be reading the Slog while Eli Sanders liveblogs the speech. Then I'm going to watch Sen. Jim "That's Between Me and My Boy" Webb (D-ASSKICKING) give the official Democratic rebuttal. (Remember a few years ago when Washington's own Gary Locke gave the Dem rebuttal? Of course you don't—nobody does.) Then I'm heading over to to Talking Points Memo. Joshua Marshall had a brilliant idea: Invite his literate, politically informed, and tech-savvy readers to give their own rebuttals....

The only thing that worries me about Webb giving the rebuttal is Webb's moderate/conservatism. For a nation that overwhelmingly voted for change, he's an odd choice.

However, given that the focus of tomorrow night's STFU will never deviate from Iraq, there's probably no better choice than Webb. And hell, he deserves it for kicking Felix's ass.

I’m not one to kick a person when he’s down and even his Republican base is deserting him… Oh, who am I kidding? Bush deserves to have his political kneecaps busted for what he’s done. He sat on his hands while genocide has raged in Darfur, he tried to write the gays out of the Constitution, after five years he has failed to catch Osama bin Laden, he lied to the American people to get us into an unnecessary war, he’s gutted the Clean Air Act, he turned America into a nation that tortures, weakened habeas corpus, spied on our mail and phonecalls to Aunt Mae, destroyed our international reputation, turned a massive federal surplus into a record deficit, damaged the country with the politics of division, stayed on vacation while New Orleans drowned, gave away billions to corporations like Exxon-Mobil and Halliburton while millions of Americans are lacking basic healthcare and on and on.

Bush reality check:

Fact: The constitution says nothing about homosexuality. He did support the anti-gay marriage amendment. That’s regrettable. But Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry all opposed gay marriage.

Fact: He might be dead, but we’re still trying. Would the dems do any better?

Myth: He gutted the clean air act.
Fact: He decided not to sign on to the Kyoto treaty. They are two different things. The Kyoto treaty is too restrictive. We’re not the only nation that thought so.

Myth: We torture.
Fact: We apply safe tactics to get information to save lives. KSM was water boarded and the info we got saved an 9/11 style attack from being carried out in Los Angeles.

Myth: We spy on mail and phone calls.
Fact: We intercept phone calls coming from foreign agents to at least have a chance on fighting terrorism. But I agree with you that the mail thing is silly.

Proud Gay Republican Reality Check:

Myth: The war lords are calling the shots in Darfur, and not letting humanitarian aid get through.
Fact: The United States has enough power, influence, and $$ to tell the warlords to go fuck themselves. Mentioning Darfur in passing during the SOTU after a few days of international press on the issue does not = working on it.

Myth: The constitution says nothing about homosexuality. He did support the anti-gay marriage amendment. That’s regrettable. But Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry all opposed gay marriage.
Fact: While the constitution does not include the word homosexual it does INCLUDE homosexuals, as homosexuals with American citizenship are still Americans and entitled to the same rights and protections under the law. The fact that Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and John Kerry opposed gay marriage have nothing to do with George Bush. Just because you bring up supposed liberals in your retort doesn't cause us actual liberals to forget who we're talking about.

Myth: He(UBL) might be dead, but we’re still trying. Would the dems do any better?
Fact: Again, referring to what the supposed Liberals would or would not do is not an actual response. UBL "might" be dead is not a response. Nor were any of your "responses" for this "myth" facts.

Myth: He decided not to sign on to the Kyoto treaty. They (the Clean Air Act and Kyoto Protocol) are two different things. The Kyoto treaty is too restrictive. We’re not the only nation that thought so.
Fact: Actually, the US signed but declined to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Since you try and make it seem as if we weren't the only big-kid on the block to decline, and we must obviously be in good-company: the only other country that signed and declined to ratify was Australia.

Myth: We apply safe tactics to get information to save lives. KSM was water boarded and the info we got saved an 9/11 style attack from being carried out in Los Angeles.
Fact: Unproven Assertion. Torture no matter how "safe and tactical" is still torture, and illegal, and unconstitutional, and against international law.

Myth: We intercept phone calls coming from foreign agents to at least have a chance on fighting terrorism. But I agree with you that the mail thing is silly.
Fact: So we have your personal guarantee that they are only intercepting the phone calls of foreign agents? That doesn't make it fact.

Myth: Who should the model be? France?
Fact: Your "fact" response to the statement you labelled "myth" ("Destroyed our International Reputation") is two snide xenophobic questions? Not fact.

Myth: That’s true, but it’s on its way down from increased revenue and not higher taxes. Bush inherited a recession from the Clinton administration and then there was 9/11. The economy is doing remarkably well.
Fact: Bush inherited a balanced budget from Clinton, Bush inherited a surplus from Clinton, Bush inherited some of the best anti-terrorist personnel from Clinton which he promptly demoted, Bush inherited a prosperous economy from Clinton, Bush inherited international good-will and squandered every single one of these inheritances.

Myth: Louisiana’s Governor and New Orleans’s Mayor share the blame in not accepting Federal aid sooner.
Fact: Again, what other people DO or DO not do in any given situation does not absolve Bush of anything. He is the President and we look to him to lead...not follow.

Myth: Corporations are allowed to make a lot of money in a free society. The White House did not send them their profits.
Fact: The White House and aides cultivated the policy which would allow Halliburton & Exxon Mobile to screw Iraqis out of lots of their own money, and Americans out of theirs. Just because the White House or an Administration says it's OK for this company to make this money in this way does not make it right.

Have a nice day...Proud Gay Republican.

So I spent a lot of time watching the pundits hash over the State of the Union speech. and on CNN I came across the psy-ops moment of the night. There was this middle aged, fairly fit latte drinking kind of guy( much like the couple in the Republican paid ad against Dean in the primary elections ). So this guy's talking about how he used to "protest for peace" back in the sixties and seventies, but he knows better now, and now what he wants is to "give victory a chance". Then true CNN to form, they interviewed the strangest people with nothing to say, to represent the other side. After that came the wrap up with our give victory a chance flanked by a twenty something couple. The marketing campain for the surge is on.
here's a link to my 2007,State of the Union cartoon;
