The Other Sundance Movie from Seattle

posted by on January 26 at 16:44 PM

I’ve been making quite a fuss about Zoo (what do you expect? bestiality and a writer who gives good gossip about Manohla Dargis?), but there was also a short Seattle film at Sundance this year: Little Farm, by Calvin Reeder (Jerkbeast).

You can download it from iTunes for your iPod, or stream it online at AtomFilms.com. (NSFW!)

At Sundance, it screened before the horror film The Signal, which has been getting tons of positive press, so I can only assume that EVERYONE IN THE FREE WORLD has seen it. Uh, free as in, free press or industry pass. I’ve found two reviews.

Ain’t It Cool News: “One of my favorite shorts so far. You get faces bashed in, guts strung up and even some exploding heads. Good stuff, Mr. Reeder.”

And the ever-contrarian Film Threat: A “completely silly waste of eight minutes’ worth of 16mm film… Oh, there is one redeeming feature: a blonde bombshell named Lindsay Pulsipher. She plays the guitar-strumming/egg-scrambling daughter and she is the sexiest blonde to hit the screen in ages. Let’s see more of her (especially when she’s running around in her panties, woo woo!).”

Lindsay Pulsipher, ladies and gentlemen. Does she live in Seattle?

She may or may not still live in Seattle, but she used to work at a brew pub in West Seattle. There's a fair bit of West Seattle in the locations in the film, too.

Oh, and she's a Mormon, and last I heard, she's got one of them long-term boyfriends, too. So, uh, just add that to your fevered imaginings, I guess.

Do NOT sleep on this movie! Or Calvin Reeder, or Lindsay Pulsipher, or producer Brady Hall....

Also see: Piledriver, another film (a short starring Lindsay Pulspher and Lee Reeder which I believe was written and directed by Lee as well. I initially saw it on this series of tubes, but can't seem to find it now. It's fantastic.

Sorry. I would delete the double post if I could.

piledriver

I found it a little slow, apart from the first montage, but perhaps worth it for the ending. I guess the stiff Hal Hartley thing doesn't really work for me, except in actual Hal Hartley movies.

These reviews perfectly illustrate the general reactions to the movie. People either LOVE it or HATE it. That is a signal that something in the movie gets people reacting which can only be good. I think.

She's cute. Looks a little like an attractive version of Martha Plimpton.

Brady:

Er, wishful thinking, much? My review was neither a pan nor a rave. (and it was of piledriver, not Little Farm, though my opinion of the latter is similarly "eh," as in, some good bits, some boring film-schoolish bits, not great overall, not terrible either).

She also worked at Le Pichet. Haven't seen her there recently.

Discounting the acting - it was actually pretty good. And same Jerkbeast from public access? Oh man, I remember watching...

robotslave,

By "these reviews", I meant "the reviews Annie posted". Er, assigning yourself undue importance, much?

Brady:

You mean those TWO reviews which, according to you, "perfectly illustrate the general reactions to the movie?"

You're the one who decided he could speak for everyone who has seen the film, chumpy. So let's not get all huffy about people assigning themselves undue importance, OK?

Perhaps you should look up the definition of "general"? Aw heck, I'm feeling generous so I'll do it for you:

"of, pertaining to, or true of such persons or things in the main, with possible exceptions; common to most; prevalent; usual: the general mood of the people."

That allows for both your opinion on the film (an exception to the norm) and the majority that we see (love or hate). See? I know english. It comes in handy when bickering on the internet!

#8, I don't know if you're aware of this, but Martha Plimpton is the attractive version of Martha Plimpton.

I'm glad we straightened that out.

Brady, you dumb little cheerleader, my point was that you made a rather stupid and entirely baseless generalization about the way everyone reacts to this indifferent film.

Your mad dictionary skilz don't address that point in the slightest.

Explain to me how "general reaction" is the same thing as "everyone". I thought I posted a quite specific definition of the word "general"! I don't know how to explain it any further. But hey, you're just trying to save face on the internet by ignoring logic and arguing for the sake of argument. So keep on raging against the machine and all that good stuff. I'll keep cheerleading by saying that a good portion of people who see our film hate it. That is, apparently according to you, the definition of "cheerleading"! Little Farm ra ra ra!!
