I'm absolutely stunned by this latest turn on the viaduct issue. I had just been assuming the City Council would be sane enough at this point to tell the state, "Go ahead and use the gas-tax money on 520. We're not letting you build another elevated highway through our city."

See, this four-lane tunnel idea may be very reasonable, but the city should have been pushing for it months, if not years. To put it up to a vote now without adequately vetting it seems almost like a kamikaze mission. Actually, "kamikaze mission" is too kind an analogy because at least that would have a chance of accomplishing its objective. Maybe this is more Custer's Last Stand.

My only guess is that the downtown power players whom the mayor and certain councilmembers kowtow to just don't want to bend to political reality. And the electeds are saying, "Okay, we'll give you what you want."

I can't wait for the biatchslapping the mayor and city leadership is going to get when this is put to a vote.

This one really made me laugh. I'm picturing them all wild haired and bug-eyed screeching "we demand $530 billion gazillion dollars for our new Sonics for our billionaire-owned stadium."

I'm all for the Sonics staying here, provided that any new stadium or Key Arena "improvements" are privately funded.

Perhaps they could get a corporate sponsor?
