The Morning News

posted by on January 12 at 6:30 AM

One War at a Time, Please: Did Bush declare war on Iran? He’s acting like it.

Brilliant! The Kurds are our only friends in Iraq. Let’s piss ‘em off!

London Calling… More of the Queen’s troops home from Iraq.

Tears of a Clown: President Bush cries at ceremony honoring very heroic—and very dead—U.S. soldier. Maybe we can forgive Pat Schroeder now.

Screwed: Pentagon rips up old rules and calls up National Guard troops for second year-long tours of Iraq.

Bombed: Explosion at U.S. embassy in Athens.

Smoked: Cops seize 120 pounds of pot, finally putting an end to the sale of that illegal drug in the United States.

Running Man: Senator Dodd declares.

Hard News: A David Beckham photo album—brought to you by the Washington Post.

Demver: Denver gets 2008 Democratic National Convention, beating out New York City.

The State of Coahuila… way more progressive than the State of Washington. Far-reaching civil-unions law approved in Mexican state that, hilariously enough, once shared territory with Texas.

Where did this phantom January 11 Morning News come from?

Ah, it's supposed to be dated January 12th and is in the wrong spot.

It certainly seems that the chaos of Iraq is providing the administration with a mask to cover its new shadowy wars in places like Somalia and now Iran.

U.S. air attack in Somalia missed
al Qaeda suspects

Edmund Sanders, Los Angeles Times
Friday, January 12, 2007

"(01-12) 04:00 PST Nairobi, Kenya -- None of the three most-wanted al Qaeda suspects believed to be hiding inside southern Somalia was killed by a U.S. air strike earlier this week, a senior U.S. official here said Thursday."

"But Somali government officials and witnesses claim scores of civilians have been killed by continuing air strikes in more than half a dozen villages around southern Somalia, with reports of new strikes as late as Wednesday. U.S. officials said operations to capture or kill the three al Qaeda suspects will continue. Five U.S. naval ships have been dispatched to the region.

Hey Dan,
I was just reading your wikipedia bio and it says you support sending more troops to Iraq. I had a hard time believing this based on some of your musings here. Is this incorrect?

All this Iran talk makes me wonder what we've been planning regarding the MEK fighters that are "under protection" at Camp Ashraf, possibly being retrained. That Raw Story link from last Spring suggests they were already being run in southern Iran. I guess that would have to be completely under the radar, since the group still has terrorist organization status. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if we've got them out there as a preparation force.

My wiki is way outdated. Won't someone please update it? I would but that seems to... vain.

Here's a piece I wrote in August of 2005—I reversed myself before Murtha did.

And, yes, it's all my fault, and I feel terrible about it—and, no, I'm not being ironic. I'm very, very Catholic, and do feel it's all my fault.

Passive-aggressiveness aside, it is kind of disappointing to read the things you've written about Iraq.

Agreed.

Dan, you've had the decency to recant earlier positions on the war and you've been a vocal critic since then, unlike many Bush lackies who not only support him still but are now raring for Iran. Having said that, I went back earlier today and re-read your pre-war/pro-war article from Oct 2002 for the first time, and it is pretty striking how poorly it's aged. You're basically making fun of the war protesters and lecturing them about how great the war will be, and how post-war Iraqi society will be just like post-WWII Japan. I went on one of the marches from Westlake to the Federal Building before the war, and I was shocked how few people there were - maybe a few hundred. And if a prominent lefty like you, in a position of power at The Stranger, had been more stridently anti-war then maybe it would've been different (not that Bush listened anyway). But you've admitted you were wrong, and anyone who still holds it against you when you've already made public recantations is just being a dick. You're a force for good.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with editing your own wikipedia entry if you are editing factual errors.

"...a prominent lefty like you, in a position of power at The Stranger..."

really? lefty???

I am really confused here...all of the red state/ blue state, leftie/rightie, liberal / conservative jargon has become completely meaningless.

So, did Dan the leftie attend any of the anti-escalation rallys yesterday or hasn't his conversion from pro to anti war activist progressed that far?

I was there with Code Pink wome for peace...and I met and spoke with many concerned parents who fear for their childrens future.

Another thing about all this Iran talk. If Iran does happen, it's not going to be the kind of build-up we saw before Iraq, with administration officials pleading the case before the UN, Nato, our allies, the congress and the general public. They will just do it, and possibly already are. I wouldn't be surprised, what with the 2008 election being anybody's guess, if the administration is taking an attitude of "we have two years to do as much as possible, whatever it takes."

Dan, using any perspective and hindsight to you might have, why did you support the war?

Y o u see what happens when you get communism the way China invisioned it? what you get is this Dystopia in China.
So maybe were supposed to have many children in our families.
Will the Church be right? Is this another argument against abortion to use as weight?( oh and I am sort of ProChoice, but I'm not a hundred percent scientifically sure of yet)
Which kind of system is better politics like Communism or Capitolism?
These questions arise because it is our qhatever God you believe in right for Science and Evolution of Mankind to weigh these issues before its to late. whew before I blow a Engine.

Man I feel for those guys. Maybe you American women can have a chance to meet some men over there. This will surelly up the Anti that Capitolism is better socially than Communism.
I've been to Japan , and besides the Japanese business man theres a whole lot of fun in traveling , mixing it up with the loacal yolkos and having a good time. Oh I forgot Japans Shinto Capitolist...... theres plenty of woman there already making lots of money. Better for everyone.... mixed races. Evolution taught us that.

there are no civilians left on this planet. everyones involved someway or some form. From sea to shining sea.
Oh yeah the shining. great movie. That kid had a premonition and the shining protected him, even though it scared the crap out of him.
We don't have to stop trying to have someones back in a fight. We just know we are responsible when we feel the deconnection from reality.huaargh!
I wrote that in my soldier mind while I was overseas.http
Its not our fault it was on the News.

I don't know how Dan would identify himself politically, but he certainly has some progressive beliefs. I do think that the term "libertarian" gets over-used. People tend to use it to describe a person who has some liberal and some conservative beliefs, which is different. I think almost everyone has some mix. True libertarians are probably quite rare.
