The Morning News

posted by on January 3 at 7:58 AM

Shiite militia members: Responsible for the execution of Saddam Hussein?

Iraqi government: “Questioning everyone” who was present at the Sunni ex-dictator’s hanging.

Guantanamo detainees: Wrapped in duct tape, “baptized,” according to FBI report.

Gay marriage ban: Moving forward in Massachusetts.

The middle of the country: Still buried under feet of snow.

Gerald Ford: Headed for Grand Rapids, MI, his final resting place.

Trans fats: Off the menu at Starbucks.

Two out of every three servicemen and -women: opposed to Bush’s policy in Iraq.

The English language: Still largely unexplored.

New Orleans cops: Indicted for murder after Hurricane Katrina.

Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode: Still an ignorant bigot.

Any woman who has a one-night stand: “Just the slut from last week,” according to Liz Funk from the (usually super-astute) Womens ENews service.

Keith Olbermann: Still my hero. “Mr. Bush, you do not own this country!”

It really is astounding that this execution was carried out so awfully. If you're going to do it - and I can see serious arguments in favor and against - do it with a bit of solemnity and dignity. If the Bush administration was hoping that this would draw a line under the worst of the violence, they're going to watch this fallout in horror, as we all will.

Hurrrk is right. The word 'slut' doesn't appear, and it's not even an op-ed type piece condemning one-night stands. It's about the safety of young, underage women in bars.

Q: What'd the difference between Shiite militia members and Iraqi government officials?

A: South of Kurdistand, only the uniforms. (You can't hand Saddam over to yourself)

Apparently the quote was cut out in an updated version. It was there, I promise.

So how was Denver?

It's not astounding at all. It's astounding that he even got a trial and semi-legal execution; the much more traditional way would be to draw and quarter him and drag him through the street. Remember Mussolini, rotting on the gibbet for a month.

Well I guess I should've lowered my expectations, because I didn't think the hanging itself would be a Sadr Brigades dance-a-thon.

What's most exciting about Olbermann is someone's judgment of public opinion that was behind the decision to have him speak the truth. Hopefully there actually are enough people out there ready to hear it, and the fact that he's been at it for awhile now is a good sign. I think it was a mistake for him to pull out the "Good night and good luck" though. Makes it seem like he has an agenda of personal legacy.

Largely unexplored? Um, ever looked at the OED? I'd say the English language is about .01% unexplored.
