Is there a word for being satire istelf while not being self-aware of your state of being? I'm sure it's possible to constuct this in german .. but that's not my forte.

Okay, so Slog can get all “tsk tsk for shame” over the fact that George W Bush used to smoke (See December 19th http://thestranger.com/blog/2006/12/merry_christmas_from ) but if fox gets all “tsk tsk for shame” over the fact that Barack Hussein Obama is a closet smoker somehow that’s a problem? (At least Bush owned the fact that he smoked when he did instead of covering it up and hiding it.)

What’s that pot? The kettle is black? You don’t say.

@5 - wow you aren't able to see the difference between the Stranger having fun with and old Bush family X-mas card and Fox News actually questioning whether you should vote for a man because he smokes? The Stranger will supply you with a million reasons why NOT to vote for your buddy dub ya, and smoking won't be one of them. FOX, on the other hand, is clearly grasping at straws to try and stop Obamania.

I don't know why i bother, anyone who would defend Fox news is completely blind to reason anyway.

I can't believe that douche bag McWhorter pulled out the same argument about Obama that Limbaugh did about Donovan McNabb (Rush ended up getting fired for it).

So what if Barak smokes? FDR smoked too and so did the fictional president on the West Wing. FDR=Bartlett=Obama. I am very comfortable with that equation....

NO WONDER the stranger is in love with barack obama. dan savage, mike nipper, and tim keck are laughing it up right now smoking their free kickback american spirits, sitting in the back of their stretch hummer. the millions they'll contribute to the barack obama campaign is NOTHING compared to the billions they'll receive through immoral tobacco advertising on every single page in the stranger.

if you think the stranger lacks any ethics or non-smoking-related content right now, wait until a smoker (and every big tobacco lobbyist) is in the white house. GOODBYE, tobacco advertising regulations! HELLO, "Capri Suggests," "Last Days of the Marlboro Man," and "I Heart Chaw By Wm. Stephen Humphrey."

@7 – I’m not defending Fox (I think they are just as slanted to the right as CNN (and the Stranger) is to the Left, and watch them both with a keen awareness of who their audiences are) but it is a legitimate question to ask if a smoker is electable to that office (it has been along time since one has been, and Barack Hussein Obama is covering up his smoking for a reason, he’s no fool politically). Its also legitimate to ask how much of his appeal is based on content and how much of it is based on packaging (though they could have done so in a kinder way) as that could be (hopefully should be) indicative of his shelf life as a legitimate candidate.

@8 – So, your saying that Barack Hussein Obama is a BETTER alky and cokehead than our current president? (What does that mean? He holds his liquor better? Cuts his rails fatter? Thinner? I don’t get the distinction.) Can’t we find someone who isn’t (and hasn’t been) an alky and cokehead to put in this office? Not that I have anything against alkys and cokeheads (some of my best friends are alkys and cokeheads and most of my favorite authors were alkys and cokeheads, I once aspired to be an alky and cokehead myself, but just couldn’t keep up with it) but couldn’t we place the bar a little higher this time?

The silver lining here is that there must be something about Obama that REALLY scares the S outta them. cause when they start bringing up his middle name, smoking habit, etc, you know they're scared.

@2 - the smoking angle didn't make sense at first since barak admitted in a book he had written prior to his senatorial campaign that he had tried cocaine. but then you realize that the reason they pick on smokes and not coke is that bush ALSO has a history with cocaine so, at least for 08, past coke use will probably not be turned into a campaign commercial. at least not for a few weeks.

Fear? Is that why "George Herbert Walker Bush" was always "George Herbert Walker Bush" (and never just "George") to his detractors?

The person most “afraid” of Barack Hussein Obama today is Hillary Rodham Clinton. In their hart of harts, the Christianists at Fox don’t really believe that America will elect a black or a woman. If they “fear” anyone, I’d bet its Edwards. They know from experience that America will elect (loves to elect) a cracker from the south.

"The point is: what else don't we know about Barack Obama?"

Well, one time, in college, when you were asleep, he put his nuts on your forehead and took a picture.

Come on, Fox News! Is that the BEST you can do?

Look for: a highly publicized highly successful kicking-of-the-habit during the campaign, showing America deep down he's got the strength of will we're looking for in a leader.

Bush smokes cigars--why no Fox News story about that after 6 1/2 years?

@16 It will take even longer for those high minded Liberals who thought Bush’s past coke use disqualified him to make an issue of it (excluding, of course, those in Hillary’s camp).

@20 After Clinton, a President has to be much more creative about what they do with their cigars to warrant a story on cigar use these days.

Cigarette smoking is a relatively mild vice, which I both understand and relate to. Smoking is the only drug that's simultaneously legal, subversive, and working class. Plus it's sexy. If Obama really is a smoker, and if he does some promo pieces where he stands Bogart-like in a smoky spaekeasy, I will be much more likely to vote for him.

@You_Gotta_Be_Kidding_Me

You are correct that each side will find inane (and sometimes more substanial) problems with any contender for presidency. Then they will cry foul when the other side does it (at least that is what I see as your opinion, based off your multiple posts). So fair enough if you want to critize that fact.

My problem (and why you are being called a troll) is that you continually use Obama's middle name everytime you write about him. We all know what it is, its not necessary. Hilary goes by Hilary Rodham Clinton because Rodham is her maiden name. Sucessful women, like her, keep the maiden name because they have built a reputation on it before they were married. Also, note that people still just call her Hilary Clinton in most cases. I also think your language "a black or woman" is interesting. You could not have said "a black person or a woman" or "an african american". It seemed odd, maybe that is just me?

Further, I would like to see why people are for or against Obama. I think he is a great speaker, and from what I have gleened he seems to be for gay rights, abortion, and political accountability. The only thing I have heard against him is that he is new to the political scene. IMHO, I think it would be better. Less favors he owes, less lobbyists to cater to.

PS. I think its cute that Hussein means "handsome" and "good". I think that Barack "Good and Handsome" Obama sounds nice.

What this push polling by Fox shows
me is how desperate they are to come up
with something negative on Obama. I suspect this desperation will come through
rather clearly to voters, resulting in Fox
(rather than Obama) losing credibility (with the morons who still give it any).

Monique,

I like to use Barack Hussein Obama because it sounds deliciously foreign and exotic. What’s wrong with that? (Don't lay your hang-ups on me.)

I regret that I did not put “a black or woman” in quotes as it was my intention to illustrate what I believe that the Christianists at FOX “see” in those candidates, not what I “see”.

While I agree that both BHO & HRC are accomplished individuals, unfortunately, that can be said of anyone who reaches a point in their political carrier where they can be considered serious contenders for this office. Granted, a silver tongued statesman would be nice after all these years of GWB, but I would settle for a statesman, and have to date only seen BHO's credentials as a silver tongue. I agree with you on debt to lobbyists (which HRC has been amassing all of her adult life) but the same could be said about an independently (mega) wealthy candidate (ie: Bloomberg) with less risk of future debts being incurred.

If BHO is in favor of gay rights, abortion rights and political accountability he’s singing my tune. I look forward to hearing him champion gay marriage. Though I do expect him to jettison the gay rights tune, or sing it very softly indeed, if he makes it through the primary and has to get serious about the African American vote. He’s going to have to appease a lot of Baptist ministers, and they won’t cotton to that sort of thinking. In the end I expect anything he says about gay rights to be so much lip service, much like with WJC (but what lovely lips they are). But what I don’t hear, and is an absolute prerequisite for me, is a commitment to smaller government with less spending and lower taxes.

I’m just a conservative leaning Libertarian looking for a fiscally conservative, socially liberal candidate who will protect the free market economy and fight fundamentalism of all shades (including the church, political correctness and the nanny State). In short, I want the State to leave me alone to live my life as I see fit, without interference, and to rise or fall by my own effort and ability.

In other words: A Troll.

Never thought I'd agree with that punk John McWhorter about anything, but there you go. We have an article about Obama from what we modestly suggest IS the black point of view at www.blackagendareport.com. Of course it ain't particularly congenial to Obama since he is the guy who, once he was liberated from the black southside Chicago district he used to represent in the state legislature, declared that black folks don't really exist at all --- that there are no white Americans, no black Americans, just Americans. That is the kind of nonsense that makes a lot of whites just luuuuv the man.

He is a black man who agrees with whites about race, makes them feel good about it, which makes him marketable. Just like McWhorter and for that matter Clarence Thomas, whose acts are also lucrative ONLY because they are black.
