everyone should thank the SNMA for this and then go join. The music and nightlife community needs an organization to represent it, and that takes money. If you don't support the SNMA, the next time this comes up, or something similar, it will pass.

Er.

In the previous draft, there was quite a lot more to object to than just the bits that restricted all-ages shows.

Do you have link to the text of the bill as it currently stands?

Given the known proclivities of the WA liquor board, I really think it might be better to prevent them entirely from getting away with this little power grab and gaining authority over the entertainment industry.

I mean, it's a liquor control board. Why give them additional control over music?

Oh, and thanks, Dave, for sending me the first draft of the bill. It was much weirder than I expected. And really, a naked power grab.

The one part that really dropped my jaw was the bit that gave the liquor board the authority to refuse a nightclub license in a neighborhood that already has enough nightclubs, as determined by the sole discretion of the liquor board.

The liquor board--drunk on power.

Somebody had to say it...

yeah, the bit about the LCB having the power to decide if a neighborhood is 'adequately served' by the number of liquor licenses is odd. But that exists now too, so it's not that big of a change. In the end, the music community made it's voice heard, and both the Washington Restaurant Association (pretty Republican Org really, and not too caring about it's smaller members who also do music) and the LCB heard our concerns. I can't explain how important it is for music fans, bands and venue owners to get involved. It's the difference between good laws and bad laws. So please, if you like going out to see music or to dance, get involved. There really are people in the Mayor's office and in the State that would love to see nightlife go away. If we don't stand up to them they will get their way.

Dave, the liquor board can already decide whether or not a neighborhood has enough booze, yes, but that provision means they'll get to decide whether or not a neighborhood has enough music, too.

I realize it's a victory to have the bill changed to allow for all-ages shows, but the new license really looks like bad news for club owners, to me. I do understand there are reasons why club owners might want separate licensing, but I'm having a hard time finding anything positive for club owners in this bill. Or rather, in the first draft of it.

RS - you haven't seen the newest version, and even that is still being tweaked. The current version is ok. Needs a little work but it far less scary and lacks the bullshit the City tried to put into it.

@7 - they mean Fremont. Why are we being excited about them NOT being Nazis? They're still being Dick Cheneys.
