Since the accusation, I think Barack Obama has been very clear that he believes a completely different set of fairy tales than those icky Muslims.

I just read Obama's first book, Dreams from My Father, which I thought was outstanding ... and definitely written by someone not contemplating a high-stakes political career (probably why it's such a good book). In it he talks about his lack of firm religious identity and basically comes off sounding very secular, though highly respectful of the positive role played by Protestant and Catholic churches in the Chicago neighborhood where he worked as a community organizer after college. I wonder at what point he became a "committed Christian." He presents himself in Dreams as the ever thoughtful skeptic, quick to deflate (kindly but incisively) any apparently easy solution to a complex problem. I hope that he's still that person. We desperate need a sympathetic but committed skeptic after this eight-year-long sticky tepid faith bath.
