Time to pull out.

I never agreed with the war that Bush started, but I don't know if now is time to pull out. At this point, I don't see how that will stabilize the region more than what is going on now. I know it would save US lives in the mid-East for the near term, but if we think about what looms on the horizon, you'll have civil strife and chaos in Iraq that will suck in neighboring countries as the entire Shia-Sunni conflict becomes an issue that pits neighboring countries against one another, eg. Saudi Arabia vs. Iran. I'm sure at some point in the conflict, Israel will then be targeted, as typically happens, and then you have a much bigger mess than what we've got now when one of these countries lobs a missile in Israel's direction.

I think it is easy for those of us who never agreed in the first place with this BS war to say that we should withdraw now, that is certainly what I feel. But I feel conflicted on what this accomplishes for the long haul. What I would like to see more of is a discussion on what would happen if we did pull out. Are we really going to just ignore a war that spreads and intensifies, especialy when we precipitated it? This is why it is depressing to see our administration attempt to resolve the mess ourselves without trying to leverage any diplomatic support from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and so on. The whole thing is so depressing.

I agree with JTC. As Powell told Bush way back when they were ramping up to war, "You invade it, you own it." In this case, as a country we "own" the responsibility for what has been wrought there.

It's a distasteful reality. Only the Bushies and those who elected and support him are at fault for the situation. But *responsibility* for doing the right thing now belongs to all of us.

The right thing includes proactive diplomatic outreach to all of Iraq's neighbors. In the end we will probably have to settle for an overall position less than we started with.

Too bad the Bushies refuse to recognize that the real effort for Middle East stability lies in a fair solution for Palestine.

Yes, we broke it, that doesn't mean we can fix it. When the bull gets into the glass shop, do you send him back in with a glue stick? To believe that we can 'fix' Iraq is racist [par for the course] because it doesn't acknowledge the fact that these folks have been getting along fine without us for thousands of years, they aren't incompetent (before the war there were actually more Ph.D.'s per capita in Iraq than in the U.S., and they had rebuilt the country once already, after that little incident where we destroyed their country before). The Parliament voted last year demanding a time table, the majority of troops say we need to get out within a year, majority of Iraqis want us out, A MAJORITY OF IRAQIS FEEL THAT IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO ATTACK U.S. TROOPS. We are an occupation force, and until we realize that we are the catalyst for violence it will only get worse.

The audacity and the balls required to try and shift blame on the Iraqi people for any of this is disgusting. Get out, now, it is the only way people will stop dying. Boosting back to the troop levels that we had last year isn't going to solve anything, using the same tactics won't get you anything different. Give the Iraqis sovereignty and power over their own affairs - to pick an international force for stabilization rather than an imposed occupation force and give them time to reconcile the people and society like they have been trying to do the whole time.

We put Saddam in power, we took him out of power. Haven't we done enough to the Iraqi people?
