Meanwhile in Nigeria

posted by on January 23 at 13:55 PM

We have a very special guest Slogger: Laurence Ballard—actor, drama coach, blogger, impassioned commenter—sent us this post about some rather unpleasant goings-on in Nigeria.

While Slog readers may all be clucking their collective tongues about the over-the-top-can-it-possibly-be-real “God Hates a Fag” video from the good pastor Donnie Davies, over in Nigeria the government is very, very serious about their hate for all things homosexual, and are getting positively medieval about it. As reported on 365Gay.com:

Legislation that would strip gays and lesbians of all civil rights has passed its final hurdle and is set for a vote in Nigeria’s Parliament.

The bill started out as a ban on same-sex marriage and has been revised to make it a crime for more than two gay people to be in the same venue at the same time. It prohibits LGBT social or civil rights groups from forming.

It would be illegal to sell or rent property to same-sex couples, watch a gay film or video, visit an LGBT web site, or express same-sex love in a letter to one’s partner.

The legislation goes so far as to make it a criminal offense to impart information of HIV/AIDS to gays or for non-gays to meet with any group of gays for any purpose. The penalty would be five years in prison with hard labor. Gay sex already is illegal in Nigeria with sentences up to 14 years behind bars.

In the mostly Islamic north homosexuality can be punishable by death.

Nigeria has a long and robust history of aiding Atlantic Slave Trade. LGBT’s are the latest addition to the slave class.

Sounds like the sort of country George Bush wants to make America.

I'm guessing the state of Virginia is taking notes.

Living in Nigeria is already a death sentence as it is, gay or straight. Have a look at the article on their oil industry in the current National Geographic. I think they're on the verge of a major, historic collapse, with probably at least a couple of million dead; worse than Darfur. Hopefully some oil executives will be caught up in the horror along with the people.

I think these kinds of radical social movements, like the anti-gay legislation, are manifestations of other, deeper problems coming to the surface. Nigeria is disappearing down the sinkhole of overpopulation, plummeting incomes, and irreversable environmental destruction. It's not surprising that social movements are displaying signs of insanity. Remember the Nazis. What's happening to Nigeria is a lot worse than what happened to Germany.

The hate criminals in Nigerian religious circles are making inroads into American churches; a lot of Episcopalians are lining up with these guys. They have NO FREAKING IDEA what kind of horror they are hooking up with.

FNARF:
Thanks for your summation. I was having trouble putting all my fact bits about Nigeria together. I read the last National Geopgraphic. I've read various other news reports recently, including this one linked today in the slog, but hadn't gotten beyond the mysterious foreign country stage in my thinking. Your tying in the gay-hatin' Episcopalians really put the oily icing on a grim picture.

In times of desperate crisis, it's nice to see that people will focus on what really matters, fucking over anyone who's different.

Coincidentally, Nigeria is also one of only three countries in the world where many people approve of Preznit Bush II and his psychopathic policies.

URGENT ASSISTANCE NEEDED

Dearest Sir,

I, Joseph Okebe, write you in the hopes you are well. I understand you are a person of good morals, and have a humble Business Proposal which I wish to engage you in.

My Dear Friend, a former provincial official, has recently been forced into exile with his family, leaving behind his entire collection (10,000+ DVDs) of Homosexual Pornography. I seek your assistance in transporting this treasure to kinder shores ...

Um, "Nigeria" didn't exist during the Atlantic slave trade. The land area that is now Nigeria was a series of city-states, which held onto their power as long as they could, sometimes by selling off people from other city-states.

To equate the anti-gay policies of a modern-day, Christian and Islamic state with the diverse policies/tactics of a group of city states that had been conquering each other for centuries is a bit of a stretch. Otherwise you're just claiming that there's something horrible in the mindset of people who happen to live in that area. Maybe present-day Nigeria is on the site of an old Indian graveyard.
