Politics Little Controversy
posted by on January 19 at 9:28 AM
Rich Little told a reporter that he was told he was ordered not to mock George W. Bush or utter a peep about Iraq at the upcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Rich Little won’t be mentioning Iraq or ratings when he addresses the White House Correspondents’ Dinner April 21.Little said organizers of the event made it clear they don’t want a repeat of last year’s controversial appearance by Stephen Colbert, whose searing satire of President Bush and the White House press corps fell flat and apparently touched too many nerves.
“They got a lot of letters,” Little said Tuesday. “I won’t even mention the word ‘Iraq.’”
Little, who hasn’t been to the White House since he was a favorite of the Reagan administration, said he’ll stick with his usual schtick—the impersonations of the past six presidents.
“They don’t want anyone knocking the president. He’s really over the coals right now.”
First, Colbert’s performance only “fell flat” with George, Laura, Fox News, and the assembled power rimmers in the White House Correspondents Association. We loved it out here in the real world.
Second, the White House Correspondents Association is denying that Little was told not to make fun of the president or mention Iraq .
The Las Vegas Review-Journal… reports that Little claimed he did not plan to even mention Iraq or to attack the president, implying that these were the wishes of the inviters. But Steve Scully, president of the White House Correspondents Association, told E&P Friday that the organization never asked Little to avoid subjects like Iraq or back off criticism of President Bush. The Las Vegas paper had reported that Little said organizers of the event made it clear they don’t want a repeat of last year’s controversial appearance by Colbert… But Scully replied: “I cannot be more clear that we never mentioned Iraq, we never gave him any guidelines,” says Scully.
Gee, I wonder who’s lying?
Via Americablog—where right now you can watch clips of O’Reilly on Colbert and Colbert on O’Reilly. Watch the clips now because YouTube is gonna yank ‘em down soon.

Don't forget the website Crooks and Liars, which always posts its own videos of these crucial TV moments. The O'Reilly and Colbert clips were posted within an hour of their broadcast.

And this is a surprise to anyone?
I'm old enough to actually know who Rich Little is. I'm guessing half the Stranger readers probably never even heard of the guy. I myself was surprised to hear that he was even still alive. He is the very personification of a safe comedian. At worst, he'll rib the Decider in Chief a bit over his accent (Rich Little's schtick for the last 50 years or so has been light hearted impersonations). He didn't need to tell us there were restrictions placed on his act, and the WHCA didn't need to deny it. We all knew it already.
Oh, and the WHCA's denial doesn't pass the giggle test. Absurd on its face. If the WHCA had any balls at all, they'd follow up last year's Dinner by hiring Jon Stewart this year (although Bush probably wouldn't even show up if they did).
Hiring Rich Little this year only proves that Colbert was right. They're a bunch of cowards.
Oh, and Colbert is brilliant.
I don't have cable and I don't watch TV. So I'd never heard of Colbert before last year's WHCA Dinner. When I first watched that clip last year, I didn't really get Colbert. And on first viewing, I didn't think it was all that funny. The subtle nuances of his parody of a right winger kind of flew past me.
I've been watching clips of him on Crooks and Liars, and other websites, over the last year, and he's really grown on me. Once I got what he was about, I find him really funny. I recently re-watched that clip of last year's WHCA Dinner, and this time I laughed my ass off. I get so much more now than I did when I first watched it.
His pairing with O'Riely was masterful. Colbert never really clobbered O'Reily blatantly, but he completely controlled every moment of both interviews, leading O'Reily around by his nose. Continuously mocking him with little jabs throughout. O'Reily could barely get a word in during either show, and looked like a total dufus. Well, he always looks like a dufus, but he's such an arrogant asshole, and he usually totally dominates his guests. To see him have no control of any kind over Colbert was a joy to watch.
Colbert definately ruled over O'Reilly. O'R look sheepish and almost meek on the Colbert Report. Hilarious to watch. The "commentators" on O'R after Colbert left, who were discussing why Colbert and Stewart are so popular, were old and completly out of touch. I laughed my ass off while they tried to "figure out" the draw to the comedy central shows. It was so sad when O'R tried to flaunt that he had higher ratings then John Stewart, regardless of their time-slot difference. He came off as pathetic and sad (as always). Does he really get it that the young generation is laughing at him?
I wonder what Colbert's IQ is. I'm guessing it's sky high.
Colbert on TV simply keeps talking and yammering away. I hate O'Reilly and would love to jam a falafel down his throat, but nobody can get much of a word in on Colbert's show. Right Dan?
Was Larry the Cable Guy already booked for that day?
Rich Little should simply not show up at all that night. Just be a no-show. That would be the most useful thing he can do, and a political statement w/o saying anything. He certainly won't cause any problems otherwise. He's like the Gerald Ford of comedy. Bo-o-o-ring!
As for O'R vs Colbert, the reason O'R can't hold a flame to Colbert is because ideologues rely on single-minded thinking. They require everyone to toe the party line and follow their master.
Comedians rely on the fact that there are multiple interpretations... that is the essence of humor in fact. Playing with different points of view.
Keep laughing folks! It'll keep your brain from getting washed. Serious.
Useful book on brainwashing.
Err...
for myself i was seriously disappointed by Colbert's performance with O'reilly after all the hype... the 30% off thing was clever (at my local Barnes & Noble the other day I counted 60 copies of the book shoved over in a corner)... if the flatulent old loser doesn't have a coronary on screen, it ain't theater
stephen colbert is very funny, but those o'reilly/colbert clips are more boring than watching a 15 hour documentary on the history and diaspora of the word "boring".
Rich Little only got the gig because Doug Henning was busy.
I have to agree that its pathetic on how the White House still trys to spin Colberts piece as "falling flat."
In the clips I saw, the audience was laughing pretty hard. Those same clips were downloaded about 30 million times. The Wikipedia page dedicated to the event become one of the most contested wiki-pages since the site began and Colbert got certified as comedic god.
How does that equal "falling flat?"
