Please, let it be a joke.

Okay, who is the one fag God hates? Who is it? Come on raise your hand?

But just reading through any church hymnal you find a treasure trove of gay porno movie titles.

Notice the official New Life Ministries logo in the lower right hand corner? Evidence that it's real.

Of course I suppose that would be fairly easy to put in, but the video has pretty good production values besides that, like the quality of the photography. If it's a joke it's a pricey one.

the lyrics of the first verse makes me think he is thinking about "laying" with a man--and he doesn't want to get hated on, so he is praying for strength to resist his man-love urges....

He has to be one of those "cured" queers. He should jet on down to Colorado Springs and give the Rev. Ted Haggard a hand in his fight with the Devil.

I assumed this was a joke - how could it not be? - but the more I look into the various related Web sites, the more confused I get. If it's a joke, it's all very well done. If it's not, I am very, very scared.

C.H.O.P.S is the powerful new program developed by Christian Youth expert Donnie Davies. C.H.O.P.S stands for CHANGING HOMOSEXUALS into ORDINARY PEOPLE.

If you have been having feelings that you DO NOT want to have towards people of the same sex as you, then this is the program for you.

If you've been acting on those same feelings, then this is DEFINATELY[sic] the program you've been looking for.

There's a similarly bafflingly plausible series of adaptations
of Jack Chick tracts that always skirts the line between is-it-for-real and outright parody. Somehow it's got the Jack Chick seal of approval -- somehow the Homosexual Reformer blowing his two young charges sneaked by the crack screening board, I guess.

After attending Whitworth College I can tell you that this is what most Christians are thinking. And they seem to have the real problem with the guy fucking guys, not so much concern with the women messing around.

Aw c'mon, this ain't serious. But it's very clever. The patently homoerotic visuals in the video, the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, the mile-long list of "gay" bands on the website (incl Metallica and Judas Priest) ... This seems (intentionally) just enough to keep us guessing. The real deal is stone-cold stupid and lame.

And, um, courtesy of eveningservice.com:

The really fucked up thing (if you can pick just one) is that the logo for "Love God's Way" is a direct rip off of the one for "God's Love We Deliver." For the 1 person out there unfamiliar with God's Love, they deliver hot, healthy meals to homebound HIV and AIDS patients. Despite the fact that I am a pacifist, that is just asking for an ass whoopin' in my opinion.

I was sure this was a joke, but his MySpace page seems very real - he has a lot of Christian friends. But why would a reformed gay wear a pink shirt?

It reminded me of the video from the Office (British) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ePGKoG4vlw

which is neither about religion or gays, but pretty funny.

I call bullshit: this is a brilliant, well studied Stephen Colbertization approach to the ex-gay agenda.

If he's a youth pastor, where's his church family website?
Also, the registration for these websites are by proxy.
Finally, the html source for these websites reveal hastily assembled code that would be difficult to frequently update or modify.

Of course it's a joke. He lists Frank Sinatra under gay bands -- how could it not be a joke? Also, on his Web site, he says that he (I'm paraphrasing here) doesn't advocating sending all gay people to prison, but it would give them an opportunity to think.

The problem isn't that he's playing it with (pardon the expression) a straight face, but that it's only marginally funny

Posted by Bob | January 23, 2007 12:27 PM

If it's a joke, how is he funding this? By ripping off real Christians?

Hey, that WOULD be funny. That would immediately place this in contention as one of the greatest hoaxes of all time. Imagine pretending to be a "reformed" ex-gay, setting up a fake ministry and soliciting money from real fundies for the purpose of putting out fake videos.

It's DEFINITELY a joke. The sites are professionally done with unprofessional content. A real organization would have a phone number and an address, not just a gmail account. The band site would have info about its members. There's not a single Bible verse quoted on any of the sites, and there are pictures of rosary beads. Most ex-gay organizations are evangelical, not Catholic.

Also, there are several little things that make me think it's a joke by someone who knows the evangelical world inside and out. If you read Davies' bio, he says his father was an "Anabaptist in Houston." There are very, very few people who would describe themselves as Anabaptists in Texas or Louisiana. Organizations like this wouldn't discuss corruption and scandal (and link to the Wikipedia entry on "Ted Haggard") in the GOP. No self-described reformed homosexual would list Oscar Wilde as a hero. Cyndi Lauper as a "safe band"? Lots of hipster indie bands that most evangelicals have never heard of? The band is called EVENING SERVICE (which may be the funniest double entendre ever)? Puh-lease.

Just this past Sunday, our choir sang,
"I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in his arms,
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O there are ten thousand charms..."

I mean, really.
Oh, and I hope it's a Colbertian (Colbertite?) farce too, financed by religious groups. Yes indeedy.

The video, the site, the my space page. It's ALL a joke. The lyrics, as mentioned, have all sorts of not so subtle homoerotic imagery. The video has them too (the pink shirt, moustache, the candles, guys holding hands). And the list of gay bands? Please. It's hilarious!

It's obviously (very) biting satire aimed at the Religious Right. The fact that people are having such a hard time telling it from the real thing makes its message even more relevant (and ingenious)!

Definitely fake but hilarious. The website http://www.lovegodsway.org/WhyNow has a link to Ted Haggard's wikipedia page and puts down the republican party and there is a picture of a woman holding a rosary. (I think for a lot of evangelicals, praying to Mary is on par with homosexuality). Plus googling any of this stuff returns nothing except for the website itself.
Awesome though, especially if it was funded by evangelicals.

The singer also informs us:

While I'm not advocating jailing all Homosexuals, I do think it would benefit them greatly. It would be for their own good. When a person is forced to think they will generally be able to see their problems and solve them by themselves.

I can't tell if it's fake or not. Coming from a long line of Republican, Christian Fundies myself it's hard to tell. (I'm agnostic). Sometimes I've seen things that I'm absolutely POSITIVE are fake and they're just not. So who knows...

I left Sagemont Baptist Church in South Houston (same place as this guy!) in 2002 when I heard a Bible study professor say to a class of ~150 adults, "We should change the laws so that homosexuals can be executed like Levicticus orders."
