I like it, except for the width. A lot of people had the same complaint with the new Stranger online version. I hope the width can be fixed, but if not, I won't die.

All in all, it looks good.

The fonts are burning my eyes!

Seriously, the by-lines are scrunched together and look yucky. The block quotes are clinical, and the font used for the text is blurry loooking.

Width is still an issue.

Much better. I like it. Fonts are a minor thing - people can set their own fonts in their own browsers. If people can't browse on a full-width screen they're going to be frustrated by many sites, not just this one.

My only complaint are the fonts. Otherwise, I like it a lot. Much cleaner. And the classified ad with the fishnet ass was awesome. I want those panties.

stick with the sans-serif font, but otherwise very nice!

Oh, and that marbled blue logo looks, I'm sorry to say, like bad Home Depot something. Why not just make it solid?

I echo others that san-serif fonts should be kept as well as the comment on the logo's blue marbling looking tacky.

Also, I think the current Slog & Lineout logos are far more appealing than the new, plain, Ikea-ish logos.

the letters are too spindly and spidery to read quickly

Pox, The Stanger has an opportunity to make a really great, readable site.

Why should they (or we) settle?

Still too wide, don't know why you chose slower fonts, but it's better than your first go-round.

I look at it full-screen in Firefox.

I agree with the criticisms of the fonts - they're hard on the eyes, and it's silly to expect users to make the effort to switch fonts themselves. It's an issue that will affect newcomers' first impression of the blog. Keep the old fonts, I repeat that I'll still miss the simplicity and symmetry of the old site, but this one has its advantages; uniqueness is just no longer one of them.

Why the love of dishwater grey backgrounds?

Stick with black text on a white background, and save the grey for the blank space on the page.

@12 - seriously.

Please add the date to the time of day in the staff bylines above new thread topics. It will save users the bother of scrolling up or down to verify the date of the bylines and will be appreciated by hungover (hanged over?) readers who need a reminder of what day it is.

Also, emulate the dailies by adding a "display in printable format" option so people can read a no-frills alternative to any world class type fonts and column widths they don't like.

Slip: It's "hungover." "Hanged" is used as the past tense form only when you're talking about a person put to death by rope.
Adding the date is a good idea. Thanks.

The word "SLOG" at the top is too small. I can hardly read it.

Also, seriously, the font is weird. I don't know anything about fonts so I can't say why, but I like the old font.

LOOKS GREAT. It would be *perfect* if Dan, Erica, and Josh could not post to it. That would be rapture.

@12 - exactly. And kill the I-Am-New-Font-So-I-Am-Better-Than-Old-Font carp.

Personally, I find the fonts (both for headlines and text) of the old Slog more readable than the fonts of new Slog.

The layout is fine for me, but I use a large high resolution monitor. But if a lot of your other viewers are using smaller and/or lower resolution monitors, and have to scroll, that is not good design.

Not much of a fan of the Corporate Blue. That seems like the worst possible choice for The Stranger.

None of this would cause me to stop reading Slog, which I enjoy. But it would make it just a little bit less fun.

@18 - don't kill the carps. What did they ever do to you?

Will the new Slog have a faster response time when you click "Post"? It's soooo slooowwww...

This may just be me, but there is a jarring discontinuity of lines from the logo/ad/search bar, to the 3 columned design that isn't quite. Even the main page layout doesn't quite confirm to an eye pleasing system... the dates on the slogroll take up an entire column to themselves and throw off the design alignment. The stranger teaser sidebar is jarring, as well, with the large "today in the stranger" title button throwing off the proportions and, again, the visual design of the column layout. It still needs tweaking.

Very nice. Ads are better separated from content now, so as a whole it's easier to read.

I don't seem to have the trouble others are having with the width or the fonts. They look fine to me.

I view the site using Safari. Unlike some newspaper and magazine web sites (Slate would be a big, slow, crappy example), your pages load quickly without errors. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making your site compatible with different browsers and platforms.

I love the width of the slog column, and I like the new fonts better than the old ones. I'm contrary like that. The only thing I don't like about the new design is that the masthead, beer ad, links to stories and Line Out, and ginormous SLOG title take so much room that I can't even see the headline of the opmost slog entry without scrolling down. Two or three of those inches need to go away - either squeeze down the links and SLOG title or move the ad - and I'm guessing the advertisers is paying to be above the scrolldown.

Blue looks better here than on the site redesign, and I like the way non-slog items are delineated. Good job.

Soupytwist@9:

It's not settling, it's the way things are. You don't have to rely on The Stranger to choose fonts for you! You, Soupytwist, can seize control of your own screen! You have the power! Do you FEEL IT?! Free your fonts and your ASCII will follow!

The server can't control the browser, and HTML wasn't intended to be a page-layout language. It's had page-layout features tacked onto it over the years, but it's still merely a suggestion to the browser about how to render a page.

The browser is controlled by the user. Some people like some fonts, some like others. The beautiful thing is that everyone can see the fonts s/he likes. If the HTML isn't written to allow for that, it's broken. The same might be said for page width, within a reasonable range.

(I do think it looks good. I had no trouble reading the fonts.)

Oh right, I'm with SDA about the color - the green/orange theme is one of the things making the site unique. But, whatever.

it's getting there, but it still doesn't say the stranger to me. and the giant slog - whoa. the navy blue reminds me of - the navy. but i can see that coupled with the lime green, it makes it more friendly. still think you guys can do better.
