Bear vs. Owl

posted by on January 19 at 11:18 AM

Really, treat yourself this morning to those Colbert-on-O’Reilley/O’Reilly-on-Colbert clips. They’re still up.

O’REILLY: I have a sheet here. It says you dislike and are afraid of bears and owls. Is that true?

COLBERT: I’m afraid of bears. I think owls are a waste of time.

Nobody won, because it wasn't a debate. It was a comedic ping pong of tiring banter, where every other sentence lapsed into a joke, jive, or inane silliness – mostly from Colbert.

I do believe the Colbert Report was better. I damn near gave myself a stroke from laughing so hard. My favorite part? Bringing on Bill's book with the "30% off" sticker still on it. Classy all the way.

Chip, there was a clear winner and it was Colbert. Remember, Colbert truly is a master of satire. Watch both the Factor of The Colbert Report. Stephen nailed Bill for good.

To begin with Stephen did not fall for Bill's trick of making his guests feel like he is a nice guy. That is how Bill O. gets ready for the attack. Colbert did not step out of character and that threw Bill off his game. (And that was on The Factor!)

Then when Bill was on the Colbert Report he was out of his little universe and on enemy turf. From that moment he was toast. Coupled with the 30% off sticker with the comment "It was 30% from day one"!

Didn't find either particularly funny... both knew that if they embarrassed themselves that it would be almost totally marginalize himself from their base. No Fox watcher wants to see O'Reilly humiliated, and vice versa for Colbert fans... thus both played their cards close to their chests.

Also... why didn't Colbert do his usual parade around the studio while the guest stays at the table? Somehow I'm guessing Bill didn't want to play into Stephen's world too much.

It was weird to watch Colbert on the O'Reilly show because he was reeling off hilarious lines to complete silence (no studio audience). Well, not complete silence--at the end you can hear the camera guys cracking up at some of Colbert's stuff. I'll bet that fathead O'Reilly chewed 'em out later.

you can embed videos from comedy central on your blog now, which means you don't have to worry about them being taken down for violating copyright law or youtube's TOS. just go to comedy central's mother load and view the video you want--click the "embed" button and copy the code in the second text box and paste into your blog entry.
