Attack at Third and Union

posted by on January 31 at 12:44 PM

Just got a text message from Angela Valdez that a man set two women on fire down at 3rd and Union. Valdez is on the scene.

The women seem to be okay. Apparently the guy poured lighter fluid on them.

More to come.

Here’s a pic that a reader sent in of one of the victims talking to SPD:

And another of one of the victim’s burnt off hair on the sidewalk:

So THAT'S what that was. I saw the police lights down the street when I was heading to lunch and I ALMOST was going to eat at Harried & Hungry (which rocks, btw) but went the other way. I missed out on all the action.

I was sitting at the window with coffee at Trabant once when a guy who looked like Mateen Cleaves walked up with a gas can and started shouting at me.

Fortunately, he walked off, but I could easily see this 'randomly light people on fire' sort of thing happening in town.

Happens all the time in Pakistan and Afganistan. Just ask the women there.
Sometimes its with acid. Whoever did this should get 'kicked in the nutz.'

Acid-throwing has been a popular form of revenge in many other cultures as well, including perhaps most recently late 19th/early 20th Century France, where the practice was identified with its chief ingredient, sulfuric acid, and from whence we derive the word "vitriol".
