Yesterday, after reporting that the State House Democrats were warned by D leadership to tiptoe around Olympia rather than flex their muscle, I complained that they were missing the point of the mandate they just got, and they better use it ... or else they're going to lose it. After that post, I learned that it's worse than I thought. Two of the City's top agenda items in Olympia this year are closing the state's gun show loophole and passing an assault weapons ban (as many states have already done since the fed ban expired in 2004.) Unfortunately, Democratic House...

Don't worry, Josh. The Dems in control in Olympia are going to make sure 2007 is a banner year for their base. They'll do their darndest to make sure there'll be PLENTY of new tax money for them to use as patronage. The legislature is going to tweak the RTID and ST statutes (and a few others) to try and ensure those measures pass next November. That'd mean gargantuan new revenue for the local- and state-level D's to spread around to their base. That's the kind of action you want, right? Big new revenue sources for unions, huge transportation infrastructure spending, etc. - you'll have that to look forward to. What, you want more? Sheesh . . .

Democrats,

What the frak?

If the Republicans had these majorities in the legislature and a Republican Governor, they’d be busy reinstating slavery, banning birth control, dumping dry cleaning fluid in Puget Sound and setting up concentration camps for gay men and lesbians.

Haven’t we all had enough?

It’s so frustrating living right next to Canada and seeing the successes that they’ve had with equal rights, child care, education and health care, while we’re just struggling to get by. We can also implement some serious environmental laws and help make Washington a cleaner and safer place for all of us and our children.

Not taking action only reinforces the right wing lie that Dems don’t stand for anything and lack courage.

If not now, when?

Andrew @ 2:

Suppose you let the Legislature actually, uh, convene before you go crying gloom and doom based on Josh's opinion, which is based in this particular post on an unnamed source and self-reference to his earlier post, which was based on . . . uh . . . Josh's opinion.

Personally, my gut tells me that the gun show loophole will probably be dealt with in an urban/rural compromise, but the other gun control issue is most likely dead.

I'm pretty much as paro gun control as you can get. Still, I'm not sure the legislature can do much unless they amend the state constitution (not that I'd be opposed to that!).

Yes, but that doesn't apply to gun shows - nothing in the constitution requires them to exist or to have separate rules.
