So... like... you can't bring a full bottle of shampoo on to an airplane, but some germphobe can carry battery-powered air filter that can burst into flames? Fire on Plane Forces Landing in Colorado A personal air filter sparked a fire Friday on a Continental Airlines jet with 160 people on board, forcing an emergency landing. Six people were taken to a hospital, officials said. Their condition was not immediately known, John McGinley, Colorado Springs Airport's assistant director of operations, told The Gazette of Colorado Springs. Flight attendants put out the flames, and the plane landed safely at around 5...

As a (hopefully) interesting sidenote: the air on airplanes is FILTHY - they just keep recycling the same old nasty airport air they suck in when they are pressurizing the cabin.

Back in the 70's, that Senator from Hawaii (who's name I can't even begin to spell) introduced legislation that would require the airlines to install a whosit that would allow them to take in fresh air during the course of a flight.

The airlines and manufactuers got their panties all in a bunch and dug their feet in, but it seemed like the bill was going to go through.

But then they found out that - Horrors! - the Senator had once invested in the company that made the dingus (or had at least driven by the factory) and did their usual character smear, which gave all the corporate loving congressmen cover to vote against having clean air on airplanes.

Which leads DIRECTLY to this incident :-)

People have germs. Get over it.

Also IIRC the worst problem with planes is not so much teh recycled germy air as the lack of humidity causing mucus membranes to dry uo, and therefore be more vulnerable to infection.
