They Killed the Goddess of the Yangtze

posted by on December 15 at 12:11 PM

The Chinese river dolphin, also known as the baiji (白鱀豚), also known as the Goddess of the Yangtze (長江女神), has been declared extinct. It is the first major aquatic mammal to go the way of the dodo since the Caribbean monk seal (hunted to death) in 1932. Scientists blame hunting, ship traffic, and the Three Gorges Dam.

The last known sighting, of a stranded dead baiji, was in 2004.

I think it must go, "WE Killed the Goddess of the Yangtze" - we all have this blood on our hands.

The late Douglas Adams wrote about this in "Last Chance To See" and now two of the animals he saw before he passed have gone extinct (that I know of)
Depressing all around.
