The War On Terror: September 11, 2001 - December 30, 2006

posted by on December 30 at 8:18 AM

The War on Terror ended early Saturday morning, as Saddam Hussein was hanged by the neck until he died. The War on Terror was just over five years old, beginning on September 11th, 2001, with the attacks on the World Trade Center. Finally, with Hussein’s death, all terror everywhere has come to an end.

It’s been a long and arduous process, tracking down and destroying the terror networks that led directly to Hussein, but now the work is done, the mastermind behind the attacks of September 11th has been executed, and we can all rest easy.

There are those who thought that the War on Terror would never be concluded, but—by staying steadfast and resolute—we have succeeded. Terror is no more. Now we need to start a new War On Something Else—Drugs, maybe?—because today is WTV Day, and tomorrow we wil be Bored.

Last night on a marginally seedy street in San Francisco, I walked by an abandonded suitcase that was leaning against a partking meter.

My first thought was "OMG - Al Quaedaeae left this unattended bag here! I must notifiy an authority!"

Before I took action, I checked my watch and noticed that it was 9:37pm PST and Saddam had already been executed, so there was no need to call anyone because the world is now safe.

Finally our government can get back to dismantling Social Security and public education because they are commie pinko left overs from the 20th century.

Thanks for the corroboration.

those were, without a doubt, the most polite executioners ive ever seen. they were about to kill this guy, who looked to be in a daze, and it seemed as if they were respectfully saying, ok sir, now were going to put you here, and then you will drop here, and you wont feel a thing and im going to put this around your neck so it doesnt hurt. why would he care if the rope burns? he is about to have his neck fucking snapped. ha fucking bizarre, kind of like when the cops beat your ass and say, watch your head when theyre putting u in the car.

So where's the YouTube vid? If Saddam was a Dictator and a Terrorist and a Mass Murderer and single handedly started the War On Terror and all, would his execution be considered news? Or would this still be considered a snuff film?

Now that the War On Terror is over, I expect to have all our troops home by the end of January.

Fnarf - get off it. That trial was a sham and a political contrivance, the rush to execution was a joke.

It would be lovly if Saddma Hussien was brought to justice for his crimes. However that wasn't what we just saw.

Don't get me wrong, Saddam was a very bad guy. But I find it profoundly ironic that they've executed the only man who successfully ruled Iraq, enforced law and order, and kept the peace. Meanwhile, Iraq continues its slow motion implosion. If anything, they've made him a martyr.

seme @ 5: The fabric around his neck was intended to prevent (or at least reduce the possibility of) decapitation or degloving of the neck. It doesn't mean anything to the condemned, but it cuts down on the gore for the witnesses. Nice, innit?

It ends before he is actually hung.

Come on....big fat xtian America wants to see more. They deserve to see his body twitch and spas as his soul is being wrung out of his body. It is just what Jesus would want.

Big fat America has its taco bell chalupa's and their karls jr sloppy bacon/cheese/grease bombs all ready to eat while Mr Evil croaks.

Let us have it!! Broadcast it at 8pm all networks. We have spent hundred of billions of dollars for this. It would totally suck if big fat America can't show it's jesus loving kiddies what we accomplished to keep them safe.

Even Fnarf would wear his Democratic Party cheerleading outfit and his DiFi wig if it aired publicly.

What a cheap shot this post is. Like anyone ever claimed that catching Saddam would be the final and concluding blow in the war on terror, even in the ridiculous overselling that occurred prior to the invasion.

At least Iraqis no longer have to fear that he will come back somehow.

Dude, trust me, Iraqis have way more things to worry about nowadays than Sadam coming back. How about being shot by US forces for not pulling the car to the side, being blown up by crazy Islamists, being kidnapped and tortured by Shiite death squads, being robbed by robbers and shot, being kidnapped, no light, no food, no fucking future. Democracy is a mo fo. Lets be serious here. This execution was nothing more than a bone thrown at the Shiites so they can have their revenge against a murderous despot. Nothing more.

I did find the funniest line in the NY times. Tony Blair is Staying Alive, Staying Alive:

"Mr. Blair himself — who faced wide public opposition to the Iraq war, which has shaped his political legacy — refrained from commenting as he vacationed at the Miami waterfront home of Robin Gibb, a singer in the BeeGees"

awesome post, Paul.

I found the point of this post to be bringing back the whole reason we went into Iraq...because Saddam was conspiring to do awful things to us, with those weapons of mass destruction that were never found. Since that's the reason we went in there and made this mess, and now Saddam/the reason is dead, we should be safe, Iraq democratic, etc.
But: since Iraq is just as violent as ever, with more American-hating terrorists than ever, despite Saddam being hanged today, it shows what a failure our whole mission was/is... what a blind mistake it was to invade Iraq, and how stupid our majority is to have ever supported this war as a response to 911.
