Soy Makes You Gay, Now With Footnotes

posted by on December 19 at 16:12 PM

Jim Rutz, chairman of Megashift Ministries, blew the minds of Slog readers and people everywhere last week with his warning that soy products make a person gay. This week he’s back to answer a few questions…

The shocking statements in my column produced much incredulity, the more so because I did not footnote or go into detail. I simply did not have room to introduce all the biggest problems with soy and do it in a scientific, footnoted format.

I will make an attempt to compensate for that shortcoming in this column and the next few…

Let’s start here: The most common question of the past week has been, “If soy is so harmful as to potentially alter sexual physiology and behavior, why haven’t the Chinese and Japanese all died off or become homosexual centuries ago?”

Good question! For the answer, click here.

Soy products – eaten, drunk, and slipped into thousands of commercial products – are rightly being blamed for a horrendous variety of medical conditions, several of them nearing epidemic status and a few of them irreversible.

I don't know about y'all, but I've been "slipping soy" to sexy straight boys for ages. It's like roofies you can buy at Whole Foods!

He cites Joseph Mercola and Weston A. Price as evidence? They're both well-established quacks.

Wow--did Jim Rutz actually call them "Orientals"?

The WORST part is that I had to click into WingNut Daily to see that bullshit.

Hmmm. Another argument for breast feeding kids. And you can counteract it by eating beef jerky and pork rinds.

Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, Cargill: that's who's really behind this insidious plot to emasculate Merkins! Dr. Strangelove was right: we must maintain Purity of Essence, people!

There's more proof - Josh Feit eats lots of soy. Case in point. Argument over.

Wow. This guy's IQ is low enough to equate ball size to homosexuality?!? It's gonna be a dilemma for us fags: either be more gay, or have smaller cocks...

What I want to know is, who's been feeding soy to all those gay penguins?

Posted by Orv | December 19, 2006 6:01 PM

Man, he didn't even read his *own* foot-notes.

From his article:
"The first difference between Oriental soy use and ours is that much of their soy is fermented, changing it into body-friendly foods like miso, tempeh, and the tamari or shoyu forms of soy sauce. "

From the Pubmed article (the only reliable source to which he linked:

"...People need to know that as it occurs in soy and other plant products, genistin is the compound that’s there. The amount of actual genistein is very low, one percent or less probably... Key exceptions are fermented products, such as miso and tempeh, which may contain up to 40% free genistein."

Fermented soy products, like those predominantly eaten in asia are FAR HIGHER in active plant estrogens than the forms of soy eaten by Americans.

And really, soy? Acrylimides that are produced by frying starchy foods (think french fries, the entire menu at fast food resturaunts) are a known potent neurotoxins. Americans get exposed to way more of this than the weak plant estrogens.

Posted by golob | December 19, 2006 6:25 PM

Golob, that brings up an interesting point: are human estrogens and plant estrogens so similar that the latter would have any appreciable effect on humans?

Posted by COMTE | December 19, 2006 8:55 PM

Plant estrogens are well-known among transwomen to have no therapeutic uses. If you want to become feminized, you need to go with human estrogens. If plant estrogens have any effect, it will be exceedingly slight.

Sounds like hommie needed to consult some transwomen about this issue.

Did anyone else do a double take at his claim that pork provides 65% of the calories in the average Chinese diet?

I would have a hard time believing that anyone (except possibly the most hardcore Atkins diet follower in our meat-lovin' Western culture) gets 65% of their daily calories from all forms of meat combined.

this guy is seriously whacked - I know this is a given but I feel the need to spell it out for some who may not understand this:
Does anyone remember the study way back when where self-identifying gay men were given _more_ testosterone and it just made them _more_ gay?

the guy loosely ties together sexual organs, sexual identity & sexual preference - last time I checked there wasn't necessarily a direct correlation here...

some of these base assumptions are pretty bad to begin with; then he continues to build on top of them...

My name is cindy now, but last week it was Mike. I went to Safeway and bought some Tofu, which I have never had. My friend told me that it would make me gay but I did not listen. I had a nice dinner and went to sleep. The next day.........I had BOOBS. two huge, floppy, boobs. Then my weiner fell off in the bathtub. DAMN YOU SOY. DAMN YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

Cindy...I am ernest, the world's first pregnant man. Soy did the same thing to me. I ate a tofu burger and grew two huge hooters. I kind of liked them so I had a soy hotdog and then all of my body hair and my weiner fell off. I could not stop doing soy though. I had a glass of soy milk and now...........I AM PREGNANT. DAMN YOU SOY DAMN YOUUUUUUUU!
