Re: Women Quit Your Bitchin’, Get Back in the Kitchen

The funniest/saddest/most ridiculous thing about this study “proving” that housework “cuts the risk of breast cancer” by 20 to 30 percent: The researchers’ actual conclusion, buried in the 12th paragraph of this BBC story, was that “moderate physical activity” of any kind—walking, riding a bike, masturbating—reduces the risk of breast cancer. So what did the BBC and other media focus on? What else—domestic servitude.

Update: Surprise! A study with similar conclusions was spun the exact same way in 2004. (Via Our Bodies Our Blog).

Will arguing in front of the Supreme Court save my breasts? Some of those question-and-answer sessions are pretty damned energetic . . .

(It qualifies as cleaning up after my clients, too! :-D)

C'Mon Erica! You just HAD to attack the homemakers of America with by shaming them into the workplace and seemingly certain, painful death by breast cancer. Really, a new low for you and you feminist ilk...

Actually, almost any real study - for breast cancer, alzheimer's, whatever - will almost always say that mild to moderate exercise is good for you. It will also say that a varied diet (more like a Mediterranean diet) is also good for you.

Do those two things and you're always ahead of the game.

...AND do housework.

Just here to help you Will in Seattle. I am betting you internet cut off or something. Damn Comcast.

BTW, Erica, my bathroom needs cleaning, does 6 work for you? I might even throw in laundry if you do a good job. Your health is THAT important to me.

Well said, Erica.
Is there any indication of where the entire domestic servitude angle came from?
I am assuming some reporter was perusing the report, noticed the list of monitored activities included housework, and ran with it. Pathetic. I guess next someone will release a report that says wrenching on the car, knocking your wife around, and chastising your children makes men live longer, since it's healthy activity.

Wait.... Aren't these the same "scientists" who have also been talking about Global warming?

Here's something even more radical (or more patriarchal, depending on your P.O.V.). BREASTFEEDING reduces one's risk of breast cancer by at least 25%, with a cumulative effect: the longer one breastfeeds, the lower one's risk. Yet I rarely see this publicized, which is quite an irritation.
