“Nazareth is kind of a shithole, but it’s home.”

You say you haven’t read Lindy West’s hilarious takedown of The Nativity Story in this week’s paper? Well get to it!

One of the best and funniest reviews I’ve read in a while. She should be writing for Cineaste. It was so good I dragged my beautiful friend to see this awful movie. And boy was it awful. Though some people seemd to find it moving. There were actually Christians crying during the birth scene of Hey Zeus and they were giggling when the black guy who played Balthazar, who had a Jamaican accent, kept making goofy jokes and delivering dumb one liners, even though he was one of the wise men and an astrologer, the director felt the need to make him child like, Im not saying its racist, but Im just saying...

I don’t think the Christians appreciated us laughing, but why did the girl who played Mary who is a New Zealand actor of Māori descent have a Rumanian accent? I felt bad for Joseph, cuz he didn’t get any. Oh yeah and the guy who played Gabriel looked like Prince and Cat Stevens. Without a doubt one of the worst films ever made. After the film, I went home and played my old CD of Impaled Nazarene.

It's nice seeing Ms. West getting Slog attention. She's a dang good writer with a commendable viewpoint. However, she makes the film sound so way out cool, even with the 'takedown' approach, I actually want to see it and expect that I will like it. I mean, with a "shithole/home" quote like that, how can I not relate?

Christians really will swallow any crap. I can understand why they would like The Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson financed it himself and directed it as an expression of his faith and not as a money-making endeavor. What is The Nativity Story other than Hollywood trying to cash in on what Gibson started?
