Teresa Heinz-Kerry evoked Gerald Ford several times during the 2004 election as the GOP her husband joined: pro-ERA, pro-choice (which Ford reaffirmed in a 2000 Larry King interview), and fiscally responsible. His court appointees that are still on the bench are positively flaming liberals compared to those appointed by subsequent Republican presidents. Jimmy Carter considered him a close friend and the two worked on many post-presidential issues together. I don't get all the hate.

But, this guy is attributing blame for the state of the world today where it's misplaced and undeserved. Reagan and Bush, Sr. are far more responsible and accountable for the massive shitpile that is the Middle East, as well as other areas of unrest and instability. Rumsfeld and Cheney would have risen the ranks, regardless. Ford might have come off as a dummy in his time, but he was a Rhodes Scholar compared to our current Dummy-in-Chief. As Democrats, we should be more pissed that Jimmy Carter inadvertently opened the door for the most destructive wave of conservatism since the McCarthy era. Speaking of pardons, do you know embarrassed I felt when Clinton decided to pardon every crony and contributor under the sun before he left office? Every party scratches it's own back. It was time to move on, period. Besides, a megalomaniac like Nixon would have loved the attention of a trial. He would have loved courting a media pool as if he were still president. Ford made him yesterday's news.

Paul wrote a great opinion piece, even if I disagree with 95% of it. The Stranger, by large, is anti-politician, and it is silly to expect them to write kind words about Ford. I hope I am alive to read their coverage on the deaths of Carter and Clinton.
