Letter of the Day

posted by on December 27 at 17:04 PM

Dear Ass Holes,

Your headline for today’s article about Gerald Ford is disgusting. Regardless of your opinion of President Ford, it is extremely sickening of you to insult not only President Ford but also God in order to show your hatred. May you reap what you sow, ass holes.

Sincerely,
David Steber
Floyd, Virginia, USA
P.S. Fuck You

You can read the headline—and the piece by Paul Constant—that upset David Steber so sincerely by clicking here.

Hmm, I guess it does make more sense for asshole to be two words.

Mr. Steber might have a point though, the article (and headline) is a bit over the top.

Any idea how much it might reap you?

That was a great goddamned article. And Paul Constant is totally right. One of the reasons today's politicians are so vile is that they know they'll never have to face the consequences of their actions.

Our nation's media spin machine will go into super duper overdrive making Bush II look good when he leaves office.

Yeah, the last 6 years or so I had been using President Ford as an example of a pre-Reagan, pre-Moral Majority, pre-Evangelical Takeover of the Republican Party. Teresa Heinz-Kerry evoked Gerald Ford several times during the 2004 election as the GOP her husband joined: pro-ERA, pro-choice (which Ford reaffirmed in a 2000 Larry King interview), and fiscally responsible. His court appointees that are still on the bench are positively flaming liberals compared to those appointed by subsequent Republican presidents. Jimmy Carter considered him a close friend and the two worked on many post-presidential issues together. I don't get all the hate.

If this article can get people fired up about Gerald Ford, it must be brilliant. Can't wait to read it.

Remember the similar outpouring of praise when Reagan died? What is it about death that makes us feel the need to put everyone in a totally rosy light? I'm a fan of finding redeeming qualities in people, but we must be honest about faults and consequences, too. I think... I'm too tired to think about this.

There was an outpouring of praise after motherfucking Nixon died. Nixon!

Nixon did sign the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and approved creation of the EPA. Just sayin'....

Gotta agree with Daniel, just a tad over the top.

Yeah, that article, or really, that editorial, was ridiculous and unneedlessly hostile. First off, no president is a beacon of perfection. But, this guy is attributing blame for the state of the world today where it's misplaced and undeserved. Reagan and Bush, Sr. are far more responsible and accountable for the massive shitpile that is the Middle East, as well as other areas of unrest and instability. Rumsfeld and Cheney would have risen the ranks, regardless. Ford might have come off as a dummy in his time, but he was a Rhodes Scholar compared to our current Dummy-in-Chief. As Democrats, we should be more pissed that Jimmy Carter inadvertently opened the door for the most destructive wave of conservatism since the McCarthy era. Speaking of pardons, do you know embarrassed I felt when Clinton decided to pardon every crony and contributor under the sun before he left office? Every party scratches it's own back. It was time to move on, period. Besides, a megalomaniac like Nixon would have loved the attention of a trial. He would have loved courting a media pool as if he were still president. Ford made him yesterday's news.

Speaking ill of the dead has always been a rather tasteless exercise. Better to haul them to account prior to their demise.

Nonetheless, the bit of history as seen by Constant shows how long the people who really run this country have been running it.

Nixon and Ford were more liberal than just about any Republican that came after them. Ford did not have a crystal ball to show him how evil Cheney and Rumsfeld would become.

Paul wrote a great opinion piece, even if I disagree with 95% of it. The Stranger, by large, is anti-politician, and it is silly to expect them to write kind words about Ford. I hope I am alive to read their coverage on the deaths of Carter and Clinton.

Dear Mr. Steber:

Do you pray to Jehovah with that mouth?

Sincerely,

Me

One problem with Paul's conclusion: It's dead wrong. You could have sent Nixon to be butt fucked in prison for the rest of his truly unnatural life, and you'd never gotten the pound of flesh we in fact did by seeing him waving bye-bye from that chopper. The pardon meant nothing. Resigning the presidency KILLED this guy.

there's something about the division of asshole into its original components that's quaint. i think it's because i keep imagining mr. steber speaking like huckleberry hound, saying the word over and over again in that sleepy drawl of his: "Ass...hole. Ass...hole. Ass...hole."
