Ahhh, the memories that evoked. A story, bare with me. The summer before my junior year in HS my mom moved us from our very small, quiet, IL town in the middle of the corn to a large city in Florida. Needless to say this was a very major transition in the life of our family, especially this shy introvert of a gay boy. Being sheltered and in an unfamiliar environment I stayed close to my family, which meant attending my little (later to be a lesbian) sister's basketball games. Now I had seen her games before in IL, but I was never prepared for what happened in FLA. You see, before then girls basketball (and boys too) was played by nice, polite, repressed little catholic and protestant farm-town white kids. Now I was faced with very outspoken, in your face, urban black and latina girls in action. They. Were. Fabulous. As a little gay boy I loathed sports, but I never missed a girls basketball game again. It was mesmerizing. Literally. The energy was amazing. The taunts, the jeers, the cheers, the attitude, the sheer joy of it all.

It made me realize that sport wasn't just about hot, but stupid and unattainable, high school boys and their stupid jock attitudes. Anyone's 'tude could be put out there if you had the guts. Go girls!
