Josh, you also have to not post Fnarf's name twice. He's been featured in the main page of Slog often enough. ;)

But I want to echo Fnarf's New Year's greetings and state that I think Slog is a great blog. Hey, I got to meet ECB in person thanks to Slog. Don't think I'll meet Andrew Sullivan that way...

thanks, stranger, for all the interesting arguments, illuminating ideas, and ridiculously petty fights in this forum.

it has been fun to watch slog grow. this forum has been a tremendous source of information and news at times, and i really appreciate it.

i wish brad would stop posting pictures of squirrels, though. disgusting.

happy new year to all.

Well now, Fnarf, it's really interesting that you've outed yourself. It's all so clear now that I know who you are ... because I know who you are.

We've known each other for a long time, at least as far back as your Boston days and mine in Pittsburgh and Portsmouth. What was it, 1990 or so? And you picked me up at SeaTac the night I moved here in early 2001.

You're still missed by the likes of Gerry M and David N back at our old baseball (and lesser sports) email list. At least I think so ... just because I own the list doesn't mean I actually read it any more.

The Slog is awesome. For me, it's not a proper day in the life without at least one visit, always including a quick look at the comments, and (almost) always enjoying Fnarf and a few others. Fnarf, you are a natural. Hey Slogmasters! Why can't Fnarf and other stars have Slog privileges? As I have discussed with some of you Sloggers before, the Slog improves the quality of The Stranger print product, by fostering a greater sense of community and personality among Stranger editorialists.
It would be interesting to compare the number of visitors to Slog, versus the number of those who visit the comments. Any stats on that sort of thing?
Best Slog item of the year (that I can remember) was the recent Savage item on the downfall of that second guy at Haggard's church. But there were tons of others. Some of the less frequent contributors (who has time?) had the highest quality-to-quantity ratios: Frizzelle, Hecht, Clement, Constant, to name a couple and unfairly omit others.
And I refuse to reveal my secret identity.

Oh, I think giving me Slog privileges is the worst idea I've ever heard. "A man's got to know his limitations", says Dirty Harry, and truer words were never spoken.

But yes, I remember you well, Neal, and yes, 1990 sounds about right. Could have been 1989 even. Back when we internet pioneers had hair on our chests and climbed sheer rock walls both to and from work. I should check in on statlg-l and see what's going. Just like the old days, the Mariners suck, just more expensively.

My other secret internet pasttime is running the indiepop list (indiepop-list@eskimo.com), which has been boring people out of their skulls for more than a decade.

The name: Rob Morgan, aka Les Miserables of Fishsticks, Pudz, and Mighty Squirrels fame, so anointed me one dark and stormy night back in 1978 at the Madhouse (formerly just up from 45th on Brooklyn) after a nonsense phrase his cartoon characters were wont to utter when perplexed or just wrong.

Now you know everything about me except the important secret stuff, like what in the hell is wrong with my wife that makes her stay with me.

Fixo asks:
on the subject of hospitals, was anyone other than me born at Seattle General Hospital? Does anyone else even know where it was?

I had no clue until I googled it. According to this document, Seattle General Hospital was located at 5th & Marion between 1900 and 1971. In April 1971, after a merger, Seattle General took over the building at University & Summit formerly occupied by something called Maynard Hospital. Another merger, this time with Swedish Hospital Medical Center, was completed in May 1978. After construction of new facilities on the Swedish campus, the SGH building was closed in June 1980.

Comment by Matt from Denver

Well... if anyone cares my name is Matt Keleher, born and raised in Denver (hence my handle). I moved to Seattle in 1997 with my wife (then girlfriend), worked in various capacities for a Seattle-based bank who just built a new tower downtown, and moved back to Denver in 2005 after we had a baby. She was born at Swedish and just turned two. I'm 36.

I loved reading The Stranger while I lived there. I'll never forget the first issue I picked up, just about a week or two after moving in: it was 1997's Queer issue and the cover art was of two Disneyesque bunnies (think Thumper), one of which was licking the other's face. Denver's Westword has never and would never do a cover like that, so I knew I had found something different.

I miss Seattle and the Stranger, but not the "Seattle Way" of handling major public projects, so when I read the current status of the Alaskan Way viaduct, 520 bridge, or the poor Monorail I'm glad not to be part of that. I'm also glad I missed out on all the rain and flooding you've gotten, along with the bus tunnel closure and the Fremont Bridge rebuild (I lived very close to it, on the Queen Anne side). But we're coming for a visit in March - hopefully the cherry and plum trees will be in full bloom.

Anyway, Happy New Year! Love, Matt

Reveal my secret identitiy? Nah, but I can share a few autobiographical details. I moved to Seattle in 1992 from my college in upstate NY (recently visited by Dan). I arrived young and broke, a ragamuffin seeking fun and fortune on the west coast. A few days after I arrived, I discovered my future wife, The Stranger, and KCMU, and have been a dedicated fan of all three ever since.

Comment by matthew fisher wilder

Since this seems to be the most appropriate entry for it, and may be the last appropriate entry for it this year...

I just wanted to say that Slog was certainly one of the best blogs of the year, period.

I certainly come off as a prick in all these threads, but if I didn't care about giving feedback, I wouldn't read it nor post here. I don't intend to troll, and don't care to change up my posting name all the time -- which I do find annoying. I never intend to hurt anyone, but I don't intend -- in the immortal words of Son Of Bazerk Featuring Self Control And The Band -- to "Change The Style". Posting as the fuzzy puppet thorn on the side is just my thing. I do this out of love and nothing more. Strange, I know.

The Stranger is a unique paper in the country. Hell, the world. If I ever seem bitchy, it's only my attempt -- effective or not -- to give feedback to the folks who post here, and nothing more. I think it's great that the Stranger writers open themselves up for battery like this on a daily basis. Very few papers do this. This is one of the main reasons I think Slog is great -- and now think greater of the Stranger people for it.

For all the non-Seattle folks: just keep in mind that The Stranger rightly points out many shortcomings about the city. But I hope this isn't your only impression of the city. I don't think The Stranger is trying to convey that Seattle is the worst, most fumbling city in the world, even if this seems to be their Modus Operandi -- and I stress "seems".

I'm guessing if any of you had a chance to have a beer with the Stranger staff, if you haven't already, you'd be sharing beer with fun people. The long hours in the office, and the little time outside the office spent comparing everything outside it to Seattle must be exhausting. So yet another toast to the Stranger for being willing to endure that demoralizing mindset, because no one else in the city will sacrifice their brain on a daily basis for that.

My name is Larry Davenport. I'll be 43 at the end of January. I was born in San Bernadino, grew up in and around Lacey, and graduated from Evergreen in 1990. I moved to Seattle in 1990 after a summer in Europe, tried my hand at being a filmmaker, and now work as a secretary at the UW. I have a love/hate relationship with Seattle, but can't think of any place I'd rather live (outside of fictional towns as seen on TV). I look white but my mom was half Cherokee half Coctaw, and I consider myself a lipstick lesbian trapped inside the body of a middle-aged, fat, balding man.

In exchange for all the slobber here, I would like to affirm that my fellow Slog commenters are the loveliest basket of peaches ever. I would mention my favorites except for fear that I'll leave the best ones out. And the Stranger Sloggers are a mighty crew, even the ones I argue with a lot, like Erica, Josh, Eli, Dan, and Charles; Jen, Christopher, Brendan, Annie, Cienna, Bethany Jean, and the spectacular Amy Kate Horn (thanks for backing me up on "fuck stick") are less often in need of correction but still enjoyable to read. And of course A. Birch Steen is my personal role model.

Jesus H. Christ on a bicycle...does anyone ever leave this podunk town?

Just a thought: In some parts of the world, it would be considered the height of provincialism to announce (with pride) that you still live three blocks from the hospital where you were born.

Ok, since everyone else is sharing; and through a combination of narcissism & boredom, I will share also...

Full name: Mike Morales. Born in El Paso, TX, raised in The Lou from the age of 8 on.

I'm the only liberal in a family of Conservative Catholic (how much fun is that?). They think I'm nuts.

Now I'm 33, married and work for a gigantic global corporation that drains the life out of my soul but pays the bills.

I discovered the Slog by being a fan of Savage Love. I still love Dan, and am glad to have discovered all the other great writers. Hopefully one day I'll visit Seattle and maybe run into some of you maniacs and have a beer with you...

Viva el Slog!

My real name is Katherine Smith and I'm a Washington State lifer. I was born in Spokane, grew up in Okanogan, went to Evergreen, moved to Seattle and now I work for a start-up that is NOT failing.

I'm married to middle school math & science teacher who is a Seattle native, we live in West Seattle, ride the bus everywhere, and I think the best thing that Seattle has to offer is The Stranger's politcal & social viewpoint.

My favorite product of the Slog comments is Fnarf's tourism slogan "Fuckin'A, It's Washington State!"

Thanks for a great year on Slog!

Nony Mouse:

If you get out into the real provinces, esp. in western Europe (IME at least), you'll find plenty of folks who, while they may have jaunted the globe just as much as any champaigne-guzzling, yoni-exposing celeb, still prefer to reside in the small towns and villages where they grew up.

In this day-and-age, where one lives has far less bearing on ones larger Weltanschauung than does ones ability to be open to new experiences, and to new and differing points-of-view.

Provincialism is an attitude, not a state-of-being.

If I were in a self-revelatory mood, I'd tell you that I'm a 56-year-old divorced male, born in Philadelphia, who had never lived anywhere except the Eastern Time Zone until moving here in 2001. I'd mention that I'm a 43rd LD Democratic PCO and activist. I'd crow about my college classmate who ousted an incumbent Republican Congressman in this year's election. And I'd talk about my various leadership roles in a major sports research organization.

But I'm not in any such mood, so instead I'll just wish my fellow Slog participants and commenters a very happy New Year.

Monique, I have you beat - I'm 23. Grew up chaotically in New England (did someone mention Portsmouth? The one in NH?), was recruited by a certain local giant Internet everything store after college. Then realized that as a wealthy young professional living in a nice place, my life was totally on the wrong track, and spent this summer living on savings and coming into my own. I'm about to leave for better climes and old friends, but I love this city and may well return someday. And I'm totally up for a slog commenter mixer, as long as it happens right quick! Somewhere on Capitol Hill, that serves more than just alcohol, and sometime next week or next weekend - would be my preference.

Comment by Lloyd Clydesdale

I'm from a big Roman Catholic family, East Coaster, sort of mirror-image of Seattle -- I love the ocean. I'm a friend to the animals, as well as resourceful in the kitchen. I've spent some years in in between coasts in Ohio and Spain, and am bi...lingual. I've lived here since New Years Eve 1992.

I'm not the smartest kid my mom had, but not the dumbest either.

My parents till death did they part. So, we all used to eat dinner together at the table every night. One of the things I love about Slog is that it reminds me of the tornado of rambunctious conversation we had over 'suppa', and either you spoke or didn't, one-upped or fumble-mouthed, forked into camps on a topic or built some understanding and consensus.

My handle is what I wish my name really was. Jesus, that would be awesome.

It's a pleasure to speak coherently or not-so-much with you bunch of friggin dickwipes. I wish Seattleites would have more flow, courtesy and knew how to hurry the fuck up a little more, and I especially wish you a confident-in-yourself, be-yourself 2007.

My alias is Grant Cogswell. There was another Grant Cogswell, who was a lover of Seattle, a poet and idealist and a political activist, but he died of heartbreak. This one is just a bitter (but fun) alcoholic and mystic who sends angry posts from sunny, tropical places like this one (Los Angeles, high of 71 today) and writes movies and causes communities all over North America to lock up their nubile sons and daughters.

Comment by SDA in SEA

SDA in SEA, does that refer to Seventh Day Adventist or just some sort of initials? - Gillsans

Ugh! Just the thought of that makes me want to scrub my eyeballs with a brillow pad. NO! SDA does not stand for Seventh Day Adventist. It's my initials, backwards. And SEA is just shorthand for Seattle. See, I'm really very boring and unoriginal. I think Fnarf sounds way cooler, and Catalina Vel-Duray is much more clever (and much more gay).

So now that you've got me sharing... I'm 45. Homo. Partnered (but not married, of course) for a long time. I was born in another country, but my family immigrated to the US when I was a kid, and I grew up mostly in the midwest (I can state with authority that Fargo looks just like it did in the movie). I moved to Seattle about 20 years ago. My parents tried to raise me as an Episcopalian, but it didn't take; I'm quietly but firmly atheist. I did a couple of tours in the Navy. I'm now self employed, which obviously gives me way too much time to slog.

And fer Chrissakes, Fnarf, if you are going to suggest a place to drink, do suggest one which makes a proper

Fnarf, I'll have you know that had I smaller feet and no ass, I'd likely be Jamaal Djbouti instead. Chin up, and may a glass of sparkling rose be your cardiac balm.

I'd party on behalf of team Slog if I could take on the role of going shot for shot with Kimberly or Shoshana. If I can hit my head off the corner of the TV getting into bed after being on the losing end of shots, I know what it would take to succeed, Sloggers.

Actually Lloyd. my parents got exceptionally hammered one evening after or before I was born...it was long enough ago that smoking and an occasional drinky or two was acceptable during a pregnancy...and they thought it would be rather amusing to name me after a model of an automobile. Frankly, I would have much rather prefered "Jensen

"Ok, I gotta know the story behind catalina vel-duray."

I honestly don't remember when I thought that name up. I know I was a really little kid (how could my parent's not have known?) and it probably had something to do with Catalina salad dressing, which I despise.

Those of you with ties to Bailey-Coy books (you know who you are) might remember that my friend Marianne named a cat after Catalina (the cat has since gone to her final reward). Catalina is also nominally the matriarch of a drag family that has has no drag queens. (We just wanted to fit in).

Depending on who (whom?) is doing the talking, Catalina can be one of several people, but on the slog, it is always - to my knowledge - me.

Go figure.

I'd take that sparkling rose over a margarita any day. I had a lovely one on Christmas Day from New Mexico of all places. Gruet, check it out. At most drinking establishments I stick to well scotch and soda or something, as I'm too tight to pay bar prices for the good stuff, bars don't have potable wine, and I don't much like beer anymore. I like good wine but I don't like wine bars. It's a problem, really. I like to drink in people's homes!

I've outed myself more times than I care to count, so why not again?

I'm Lisa Herbold, 39, proud mama of a 20 yr old daughter, grandmother to a 2 1/2 year old granddaughter, happily cohabitating with the person who best matches me in my sometimes over-bearing intensity (who is prolific poster who has opted NOT to reveal himself). I have worked for Councilmember Nick Licata since the spring of 1997, first on his campaign and now on his staff.

I moved to Seattle in 1992 from Syracuse, NY. I had hippie parents who moved us around the country (PA, CA, eastern WA, and upstate NY) and forced me to live in unconventional ways that I loved when wee, grew to hate in adolescence and with maturity have grown to appreciate.

Before working for the city, I worked for 10 years for various non-profits, mostly organizing around issues of housing and equal access to public services for low-income people.

Biographical details: Seattle-native, graduated from Nathan Hale HS and The Evergreen State College, former writer for the Rocket and Backlash among other publications, live on Beacon Hill with spouse and two cats, working on MA that I may actually finish someday, lifelong Democrat, still mourning for the monorail.

#108, Matt from Denver: I completely understand about the NM wine. I spent my college years sucking down bottles of Plum Loco, which is cheap, delicious and famous throughout the state. The Southern NM Wine Festival is an amazing place to down a mimosa or three, and I had a raspberry kir there last year that remains permanently tattooed on my taste buds, it was that good.

As for me: I moved to Seattle in July for no particular reason other than I hadn't lived in the PacNW before. Reading The Stranger (and the Slog) was a pastime I picked up in my last job, much to the annoyance of my old boss, who I bribed with cigarettes to get her to go away. I'm younger than I'd like to admit and grew up under the thumb of the Air Force, who I have to thank for shuffling me around and threatening to send my old man to Qatar. Great times, really.

Also, Rebecca is my real name.

More to the point:

I propose Saturday 6 January, 7:30pm, in the back room of the Cha Cha. I'll wear a "Hello, My Name is Treacle" sticker on my cardigan.

Two more "see you there!" votes, and we can plan on it.
