Yo! Votin for Realz!

posted by on November 2 at 11:37 AM

Pretty much every year, various political groups, media outlets and rap stars declare that this is the year for The Youth Vote. But yesterday an unusual player joined Team Youth Vote Revolution For Sure in 2006: Harvard Institute of Politics. According to their newest polling, the 18-24 year old demographic is planning to turn out in record numbers, with 32% saying they will “definitely vote.” That’s a huge jump over the last midterm elections, when only 19% voted… in fact, 32% is the highest polling in twenty years.

If the poll is valid, that’s good news for the liberals, since The Youth are decidedly hostile to the Bush regime. They rated GWB’s performance an average of C- on seven issues — that’s even worse that his infamous college GPA — the worst grade being a D+ on the War in Iraq. Only a dismal 18% think the country is headed in “the right direction” but teenage apathy be damned: 70% of 18-24 year olds think “politics is relevant to their lives.”

All of this might not make such a big impact for Washington races though, since our fair state ranks none too well in terms of youngins votin’ … in 2002 only 17% turned out, putting us right ahead of Mississippi.

Three of the top five youth voting states allow day-of registration at the polls. The deadline already passed in WA and yes, since I’m a youth, I registered on the last day possible (and yes, I love describing myself as “a youth”) . All the Dems can hope for now is that those “definitely voting” young things actually show up at the polls.

Kieth Olbermans newest tirade oabout the Administration and why the president should apoligize, not Kerry.
Hes one tough anchorman editorialist whatever.
Get him on the Daily show asap John Stewart.
How about a face off with him against Rush limbaugh or Michael savage.
I personally dig Savage butit would be interesting debate battle.
The GOP(or Granpas Old Pervs)are gonna falter in this election even if the Dems don't get the 5 seats needed to contol it all. The President and the country will be better off if the Goofy Old Pervs in the Gop would just retire and get the hell out of the senate. I'm sick of those Old bastards because all they do is sniff eachothers nuts and tell us how to be all moral and shit. Dont they realize Hollywood is going to be the new Washington D.C and we dont care one Iota what the Gop thinks. Just retire you old farts and let in some new fresh air in the Senate and Congress. Go to Cabo san Lucas and drink Gin and play golf you GOP goosestepping nut sniffers blah blah pttth. I still like the President though. he just needs a Democratic leash.

Youth vote, huh? I'll believe it when I see it. Been let down by those little pukes one time too many.

(How about GOP = "Geriatric Old Pervs"?)

Shouldn't most of them have already voted absentee by now?

Youth is wasted on the young.

I'm not holding my breath for the youth revolution, because we got our hopes up for them to turn out in droves in 2004 - and hardly any of them remembered to vote, or gave enough of a shit. They registered in record numbers, but they all forgot to go to the polls, or something.

Then again, I confess I didn't vote in the first election I was eligible for, either (which was also a midterm). I first voted so that I could vote against the Aged Incumbent, Saint Ronnie the Ray-gun.

I'd think most of the absentees are daytime workers who don't have a lot of disposable time during the day.

Candidates in some races certainly need a huge turnout from a lefty minded youth vote, especially a certain one on the Eastside.

Actually, Geni, those youth voters DID turn out nationwide in 2004... it's just that many of them, not a majority but enough, also happened to be supporters of the incumbent president.

pffft!! 32% of students say they "definitely" won't write their essay the night before it's due.
