What does fair trade have to do with HIV/AIDS?
More than you think.

WHERE: Ethnic Cultural Theatre, UW

WHAT: A free forum on AIDS/HIV, fair trade, access to essential medicines, and health as a human right. The event is hosted by Amnesty International at the University of Washington, Student AIDS Action Network, Students for Fair Trade, and Universities Allied for Essential Medicine. Speakers from each of the hosting groups will address the current state of the worldwide AIDS pandemic with an emphasis on action that can be taken by students and community members to help the movement for full access to essential medicines for AIDS/HIV patients in the developing world.
Patent law and intellectual property provisions in university research contracts and free trade agreements have a large effect on the availability of essential medicines in developing countries, often impeding the creation of generic drugs that many impoverished patients need to survive. Speakers from Students for Fair Trade will discuss the effect of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) on access to essential medicines, as well as the importance of upcoming bi-lateral trade agreements such as the Peru Free Trade Agreement, and Universities Allied for Essential Medicine will explain their campaign to ensure that drugs researched in campus labs are accessible to people in developing countries. Both groups will provide concrete examples of action that students and community members can take today to support fair trade and access to medicines.

Normally I would celebrate World AIDS Day with some hearty gay sex, but I'm getting to the age where I'd rather watch reruns of "Law and Order SVU" and think about making out with Christopher Meloni.

This is goin on at Seattle University. ..pretty sure it's open to all:
“Vigil of Hope,” a time of reflection and prayer for all who have been affected by HIV/AIDS, will take place from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 30 in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. A reception with refreshments will follow in the LeRoux Conference Center. The vigil and reception are being hosted by FACE AIDS and sponsored by Magis, Catholic Relief Services, National Catholic AIDS Network and Multifaith Works.
Attendees are encouraged to stay for the SEAC Storytellers panel, “The Two Sides of HIV/AIDS,” which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Leroux Conference Center.
I have a hangover scheduled for this Friday (my birthday is Thursday).
I might watch the "Jared (from the Subway commercials) has AIDS" episode of Southpark though.
