the transcription is a great insight -- i can't wait until I get home and can listen to the whole thing. having not read anything of hers, of her novels (white teeth, the autograph man, on beauty) which should one start with? or are her short stories enough to give you taste?
Bookworm is the most awesome radio program for book nerds. Michael Silverblatt does the best author interviews--and not just about the newest book the author's published. I think he reads everything the person's written and asks questions about the work, from the inside out, and driven by the experience of his own reading. Go in the archives. Very addictive. Just sayin'.
Good question, Charles. Everyone always violently disagrees with me, but say start with The Autograph Man. It is the shortest. It is the funniest. It's a bit caricatured and weird but I think its caricatured weirdness is a virtue. And it has a fantastic drinking scene. It is about celebrity, the movies, and death anxiety.
Her short stories are not very much like her novels...
The best part about starting with the Autograph Man is that you're less likely to be disappointed by it if you haven't already read White Teeth.
