Weekly Contradiction

posted by on November 8 at 13:37 PM

Considering that Seattle Weekly writer Mike Seely recently wrote an unflattering tell-all column about his experience as a paid Cantwell staffer during the 2000 campaing, it’s lame that he’s now criticizing former Seattle Weekly writer Geov Parrish for writing unflattering tell-alls about the Seattle Weekly.

Seely wrote this about Parrish:

After parting ways in a seemingly amicable manner some three months ago, another ex-Weekly scribe, Geov Parrish, has now taken on the voice of a chest-thumping faux insider whose disdain for the Weekly and its current owners knows no boundaries. Personally, I can’t stand journalists (and people, for that matter) who embody this sort of passive-aggressiveness, but the point here is that the post-mortem musings of disgruntled ex-writers should be taken with a fistful of salt.

But here’s Mike Seely doing a bit of disgruntled ex-staffer chest-thumping himself—about his stint with Cantwell:

Cantwell is far from perfect. In fact, she ranks high among the most difficult people I’ve ever worked for or with. The seven months I spent in her charge felt like seven years… conspicuous consumption during happy hour became all but a necessity, as it was invariably better to be half in the bag when Cantwell, a paranoid hellcat of a boss who rolls through staff like toilet paper, would make her daily sweep through the office, berating everyone in sight.

Dude, Mike bra, just say the "b-word". It's just all us dudes reading this. We're behind ya... see you at the cafeteria, Seel. *slaps ass*

Whatever, Seely, like saying it to your face and causing a ruckus would have accomplished anything.

And the Nickels Smooth Jazz parody still sucks and isn't funny.

Umm, how was Geov a "faux insider" after working over 7 years at the Weekly? And how is it "passive aggressive" to publish a criticism of the Weekly after it more or less forced him to resign? Seely's criticisms border on the incoherent.

Dude, nobody reads this Arizona Weekly rag anymore. Stop wasting space writing about it.

seely writes: another ex-Weekly scribe....

it speaks volumes that geov (who i just adore) is just another voice to the chorus of dissent. it seems to me that the weekly has more ex-employees this year than it has current staff members.

In contrast to Mike Seely's brief stint on Cantwell's 2000 campaign, I've actually spent years of my own life working for or with the Senator, both during her first stint in Congress and at RealNetworks. The first thing I'd say to Mike is, if you want a friend, get a fucking dog. Maria does not hire people to be their friend, or their cheerful den mother. She has devoted her life to public service, she views it as an important calling that impacts a lot of lives, she sets extremely high standards for her own performance, and she selects people for her staff who she thinks will maintain the same high standards. That is clear to everyone up front when they come to work for her. If you didn't like her "berating" your drunk, incompetent ass, you should keep your opinion to yourself. Show a little discretion before airing your petty grievances with a woman who never shows anything short of the utmost loyalty to the people who work hard for her.

Mike clearly needs to grow into his job. He's too busy picking the wedgie out of his ass to write good satire.

M. Seely has seem to have been give enough rope, but I was coming to see Parrish's pieces as just so much whining anyway, so why should his tell-all be different. And it is the centerpiece of a fundraising campaign for ETS. ETS has its place, but it does not reporting. I appreciate the lip service, at least, to reporting, that is to say "journalism," is something I thought could be good for the Weekly. But first with the advertising circular for hipster drinking spots and then a lame parody of the mayor...here's hoping that Rick Anderson and Nina Shapiro (bye-bye Phillip) hang on.

and please tell me: why young alterna-journalists in Seattle who get into places of power not warranted by experience all want to be New Yorker writers? do they read anything else?
