The Vogue: Gossip Update

posted by on November 14 at 15:05 PM

I just received an update on the Vogue-related gossip I posted last week, from Slog reader Rachael:

The cat is now out of the bag among the goth community now so it might as well get put out there to the general public. Facts: 1) The Vogue is closing at the end of the year. 2) The new club will be called Blacklight and will be in the upper level of the Capitol Hill Arts Center (CHAC) and opening in the second half of January.

And there you have it, for now…

I also heard (at the Vogue) that the new space inside CHAC won't be open every night (it'll be a weekend thing) and that the reason behind the move is a massive rent increase in the current space.

So, I presume this means no more theatrical presentations in the CHAC upper level?

For those still paying attention, the correct answer was b) gentrification and a rent spike forced the Vogue out.

If the name and location changed, how can it still be the Vogue?

...as long as Monty and Shawna are there, it'll always be the Vogue to me...

When it morphed from WREX to Club Vogue in the old Handlebar location downtown we thought it was a big deal back in the day. Wasn't. Isn't.

Has anyone else ever wanted to break into the Vogue and paint the walls pink with happy faces and affirmations all over?

The name vogue is "owned" by the same asshat that is trying to charge them way too much money for the space they are currently in... Thus the name change.

I'm with Comte - what impact will this have on CHAC's theatrical presentations?

So who's this jerk trying to gouge the Vogue? I knew about the rent spike, didn't know about the business of "owning" the name. Typical. Slimey landlords!

Once more they get together and decide they deserve a bigger piece of our incomes. They deserve a tenant revolt, in my opinion.

My sources are telling me the "club" will be open Thursday, Friday & Saturdays, starting at 10:00 p.m., due to the "sound template" at CHAC that restricts amplified sound in the building to accomodate theatre productions in the Annex and/or Lower Level spaces.

So, technically a theatrical production could still run in the Showroom, so long as it came down before 10:00 p.m., and presumably struck whatever scenery was being used, which would be pretty much the same as how Re-bar has operated for most of its existence.

Putting rumors to rest, the best we can...
Yes, Monny & I (Shawna) are moving to CHAC,in the large theater space, the name of our project is Blacklight. We will be open Friday, Saturdays and Sundays from approx. 10:30 til 2. We will keeping people posted on exactly when (mid-January). It looks like the 11th Ave. space is going to be restaurant, at this point.
In the meantime, we are still going strong after 23 years, thanks to everyone who knows and loves the club, and I hope to see you at Blacklight as well!

thanks for clearing out the rumours, Shawna. Yes, it is true that Monty, Shawna, and I (Matthew at CHAC) are working on the logistics of having Monty and Shawna run Blacklight out of the Showroom at CHAC. Our major discussion right now is with them and people like Printer's Devil (that's for you at work hando) to figure out how best to have these groups co-exist, without either having to sacrifice anything important (we do not plan to strike everything every night). By "these groups" I mean everyone from dance companies (like KT and Crispin), comedy groups (like Laff Hole & Comedy Underground), dance/art parties (Infinite, Oracle, Kaos Labs, others), theatre (annex, printer's devil, balagan, 14/48, cap hill high), music (polyphonic, shringara, Silent Lambs, United House Front, Jupiter Crash, others), and other performance (PURE, SSP, Mike Daisey, Stay Up Late Show, others). Before you grown at this, I will tell you that this is a model that we all (in arts and entertainment in seattle) need to be thinking about how to make work if we plan on surviving here on the Hill. though we currently have many great spots here of all different varieties, it seems to me that we are going to see approximately 30-50 closures in the next year, and that is just the beginning. Real estate is getting more expensive by the day. Many of us are trying to organize the neighborhood to help preserve arts, culture, bars, clubs, and all the things that we love on Cap Hill. If you are interested in this, please email me. Stand up for what you want to see remain, it needs your help. Coming together to form coalitions makes us all stronger.

Nicely put, Matthew.

How is CHAC set up concerning the looming sprinkler requirements?
