How about this lovely item:
GOP leaving spending bills to Democrats
WASHINGTON - "Republicans vacating the Capitol are dumping a big spring cleaning job on Democrats moving in. GOP leaders have opted to leave behind almost a half-trillion-dollar clutter of unfinished spending bills…
Driving the decision to quit and go home rather than finish the remaining budget work is a determined effort by a group of conservative Republicans to prevent putting a GOP stamp on spending bills covering 13 Cabinet Departments — and loaded with thousands of home state projects derided as ‘pork’ by critics.
Some Republicans also look forward to using unfinished budget work to gum up an early Democratic agenda that includes raising the minimum wage, negotiating lower drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries, cutting interest rates on college loans and repealing some tax breaks for oil companies.â€

The Republican Party truly has become institutionally dishonest, hateful and criminally incompetent. They should all be in prison for willfully violating their oath of office.
the Utah link ain't (as they say in MO) working
Oh, Andrew, if a little budget chicanery is enough to get you thrown in jail, the government will cease to exist. Expect much, much more of this kind of posturing in the next two years--er, decades.
The most unpleasant thing I've read this morning was how the morgue in Baghdad identifies Shias and Sunnis: the former are beheaded, the latter have had their heads drilled.
For the record, I volunteered at the Crisis Clinic for a year (two years ago) answering phones and we never put people on hold - that was essentially unheard of. So either things have changed (same clinical sup.) or this was a fluke. There were things I didn't like about how the place was run, but this was not one of them - certain things are pretty sacred. I believe this enough to think that the clinicians who were complaining were wrong - e.g., if they identified themselves as that and it was non-emergency, someone might put them on hold if it was really busy or to transfer them.
This kind of story is unfortunate, though, because even if it is true it may prevent people from calling when they need to. But it really is a good place to call for someone to talk with - not just regarding suicide but anything important.
I've been to the gay animals exhibit in Oslo, and for the amount of international press it's getting, it really isn't that big or amazing. There are a few pictures of big gay orca penises and a few chimps jerking off, but most of the displays are just existing animal models or stuffed and mounted animals arranged a little differently to demonstrate same-sex pair bonds. There are some fascinating stats and everything, but I was expecting just a little more.
However, the underlying message is pretty interesting. Puritan views of sex in the animal kingdom are unrealistic, and if we bind animals to the conventions of human societies, we're ignoring a major part of human behavior because of this short-sightedness. And hey, animals don't consciously have sex to reproduce; they have sex because it feels good to them.
But the whole display is *tiny*. Just one small room in the Natural History Museum...
How was the rest of the museum?
Letterman, Jerry and Richards talked this thing over and concocted the whole skit to bail his ass out. I'm no conspiricy theorist, but it seems obvious. The charade was a good lesson on how to get in some hot water, then use the media to back peddle. I agree with Schmader in that more explanation is needed, not however on WHY it happened but simply frank discussion on racial issues. This Seinfeld episode was just an excitable wash occuring over the real matters that are present. Talk about Shock and Awe. Gimme some real meat, TV entertainers.
LOL Suicide callers put on hold. I guess it's a form of population control.
I WORK for the Crisis Clinic, and I assure you, nobody calling the crisis line would be put on hold before the phone worker figured out what was going on. However, if you call the crisis SUPERVISOR's line, which the social worker in the article should have called (and probably did call) you may be put on hold. She is obviously mistaken. I'm serious. The phone workers who answer the crisis line phones are supervised by Master's level clinicians, and go through extensive training. It just wouldn't happen.
HOWEVER, if there are more calls then there are phone workers to take them, the call may go into a "queue" and will be answered as soon as someone is available. The reality is, there are a lot of calls, and there isn't always enough people to answer all of them right away. We get tons of calls, the majority of which are NOT crises, by the way.
The PI article is very poorly written and does only a cursory job of investigating the issue. I'm very dissapointed in them.
