The Morning News

posted by on November 16 at 7:23 AM

Brief: Jackson performs fleeting version of “We Are the World,” throws his coat into befuddled crowd.

Under fire: Pelosi, who continues to back controversial congressman Murtha for House Majority Leader.

Making progress: Pakistan, which finally moved toward changing a rape law that requires victims to produce four male witnesses.

In the crosshairs: Animal-rights radicals, who now face stiffer penalties for “eco-terrorism” than ever.

Bizarre: the New York Times’ explanation for Marines’ rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, which the paper said resulted from “frustration” at insurgents who blend in with civilian population.

Intolerable: Conditions for women in Afghanistan, where increasing numbers of women are committing suicide by setting themselves on fire.

Tough: Democrats’ letter to Bush on global warming. “We pledge to work to pass an effective system of mandatory limits on greenhouse gases.”

The world’s tiniest violin: Playing for convicted ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who called his minimum-security prison a “nightmare.”

Icky: Boobs, according to Delta Airlines, which kicked a mom off a flight for breastfeeding.

No surprise: The press obsesses about Nancy Pelosi’s clothing choices.

Perplexing or just revolting? You decide: OJ book describes how he would have killed his wife, “If I Did It.”

See, the guy thought he was raping and murdering a 14-year-old insurgent and her family! It's the fault of those insurgents for blending into the civilian population!

Wow . . .

re: breast feeding...sorry to be repetitive, but it is a boob. Why are people so terrified by a boob?

You know, I have no real desire to watch someone breast feed a baby but...
a. I have this amazing ability to not watch if I don't want to see something
b. a kids gotta eat
c. I'd much much MUCH rather be stuck on a plane with a breast feeding baby than a screaming baby.

People are just way too uptight.

What's with the selective quoting and sensationalism? That Times article doesn't say that the frustration over the insurgency caused or explains the rape. The juxtaposition of that paragraph is perhaps a little bizarre, but no less than your leap to the idea that they're making a causal link.

Full quote, which is a paragraph all to itself:
"The legal actions are part of the fallout of the fighting in Iraq, where insurgent fighters blend in with the civilian population, frustrating soldiers who are subject to roadside bombing and other attacks."

I'll admit the wording is awkward, but it seems to me like more of a description of context than an explanation. Nowhere does it say that this justifies, excuses, or explains the rape of a 14-year-old.

Sometimes it's like watching FOX News around here.

Wow, the harmonic convergence of Michael Jackson and OJ Simpson in one post. It's almost like being present for the birth of Christ.

And The Stranger got front-page mention in The Times today.

For all the people that bitch and moan that Seattle doesn't have enough cops, the Craigslist Hooker story is proof that we probably have too many!

The animal rights activist bill, while shitty, is an overreaction to some rather horrible British activists. They really did terrorize researchers and employees at a lab that uses animal subjects, including threatening their families, and when the company announced they were going to have an IPO on the NYSE, they announced plans to attack the NYSE, which subsequently backed down and canceled the IPO. This law clearly goes too far, but the people who inspired it actually do deserve the label "terrorist."

Err?
Huh? Barnett handed you the source material—and so you were able to make the observation you made, weren't you? That's not what they do at FOX news.

Nancy Pelosi is a two-timing dingbat. This rich limousine liberal (55 million!), who sang the praises of Caesar Chavez and his union organizing in the 80’s, employs NO union labor in her family’s vineyard, restaurants, and hotel businesses.

Josh that's kind of like Bush not repsonding protesters' criticisms, and instead making some bizarre comment about how great the first ammendment is.

also pelosi hater you reinforce erica's point since dingbat is not an insult generally used to describe men. and who knows what you're talking about with "two-timing"-- whether that's a weird sexual morality attack, an awkward way to call someone a hypocrite, or you're busting out your inner yosemite sam.

Well, I say ECB's comment is right on the money. The NY Times described three prosecutions and proceeded to link all of them to frustration with insurgents. Fucking bullshit.

It's too bad that Abramoff didn't use his lobbying power to reform American prisons. It's also too bad that he wasn't sent to a privatized prison. Now that would be a beautiful thing.

(I retract "hater")

WF: It's hypocritical to advocate union labor and then employ wet backs to pick your grapes. Clear enough for you?

Gee, we've done such a wonderful job in Afghanistan - not catching bin Forgotten, not removing the Taliban from power, not remembering that we even have troops who've been stuck there for years, and now not improving the treatment of women - in fact, it's worse than it was.

Maybe if we hadn't gone kiting off into Iraq for only-Shrub-knows-what-reason, we could have actually set some goals and accomplished them in Afghanistan. Instead, we just go charging in like fucking Rambo and then let the troops dangle there, with no mission, no goals, and no plan to figure out what they're there to do, how to tell when they've done it, and when to withdraw them.

(I still have a cousin over there, not to mention the cousin and nephew I have in Iraq. The cousin in Afghanistan says they feel like they've been completely forgotten.)
