Buenos Aires is no joke. My wife and I were there a few weeks ago and probably wouldn't go back. I'd visit the rest of Argentina again in a heartbeat. Patagonia is beautiful and we felt very safe there, but BsAs is a different story. San Telmo, while a magnet for tourists and charming during the day, is sketchy at night and borders a dangerous section of town.

In another neighborhood, we came upon an elderly American couple who had just been mugged. The wife had been knocked over, the husband stabbed in the arm. The assailant got the purse and watch and took off on the back of his friend's motorcycle.

Imagine what's going to happen to those phone numbers once the thief figures out what he's got.

I lived in Buenos Aires for several months. I felt quite safe at all times of the night. There is poverty there, though, and rich tourists, so a purse snatching is to be expected I think. Not to blame the victim...

Hey, I don't know if I should apologize in name of my city, feel sorry or proud...
I am sorry anonimous coward for what happened to you. I'll just say something: Buenos Aires is probably safer than a lot of other latin american cities, but looking too touristy, too american or too rich is a bad idea. Also, it is wise to ask what places should be avoided or visited in large groups at night.
Rome and London weren't very different when I visited there and I guess N.Y would be the same...

Nothing happened to me personally BsAs Girl, but thanks for your concern. Just saying that I felt less secure there than I did other places I've been. Maybe the robbery spooked me a bit and colored my view.

I think the rest of the country has more to offer visitors than the BsAs. I'd definitely go back.
