I think the Dems can forget about the Eastside. There are just too many haves and not enough have nots there, and the haves spend almost all of their time worrying about holding on to what they think they possess. Is it greed? I don't know. But they obviously have no idea what it's like for the working poor in this country (and they want no idea either).

I'm not even sure a scandal - on the scale of catching a Republican candidate in bed with a goat - would entice people over there to vote for a Democrat. Perceived threats to their lifestyle overrules everything.

Actually Bauhaus, I suspect that it has more to do with South King County and Pierce county than the "haves" enclaves of Bellevue et al. The Microtrendy areas are actually leaning more left... look at the state house seat elections...

While it's easy to bash the Eastside I think that Burner's near win shows that the Dems have a chance. But what they need to do is run a candidate with some actual credentials. I hate to say it but Burner was a total lightweight and all the slobbery pieces in The Stranger can't change that. All the Dems needed to do was run someone with at least a modicum of experience and history and they would have won.

Oh, cry me a river, Bauhaus. The Dems could have run a stronger, more credible candidate and whipped Reichert. That it was even this close speaks volumes about the Dems' chances in the 8th.

@3. Right on. I cannot wait to wipe that smirk of Hair McEmpty-head's face in the next election.

And way to go Eastside, assuring that you'll be totally powerless in the newly Democratic-majority house. Reichert was pathetic even as a lacky for the majority republicans. Now, as a do-nothing, non-thinking member of the minority party, I'm sure he'll really bring home the bacon now.

I wouldn't write the Eastside off -Luke Esser lost there, for example. I'm with the poster who mentioned Pierce County as the deciding factor in this race (and Stranger hype notwithstanding, Burner really wasn't a particularly good candidate).

can we make the damn bridges toll bridges and keep the Microsoft fucktards on their own side?

The "eastside" (i.e. Bellevue, Issaquah) voted for Burner. The south part of the 8th district voted more heavily for Reichert. A much more concentrated effort will need to be made in Bonney Lake and Auburn next time, if the D's are to win the 8th.

Cush-- you should see the reverse commute of Microsofties (and Eastside techies, generally) from such regions as Ballard, Fremont, Montlake the CD and Madison Valley daily. Your money would be doubled.

Cushiou---Ever notice the massive traffic gridlock going east on 520 in the morning and going west in the evening? There's a lot of toll bridge money to be made from Seattle "fucktards" who work on the Eastside but don't live there.

Why is every Democrat this state sends to Washington DC a woman? Can't we come up with a male candidate for once?

Um, Dude: Jim McDermott, Jay Inslee, Brian Baird, Norm Dicks, and Adam Smith are all men.

And those of you using that broad brush to talk about writing off either the eastside or south King County are really starting to make me wonder if you guys ever leave the safe environs of the city. Take a good look at the boundaries, and the state legislative representation for the eastside and south KC districts - the 30th, 47th, 11th, 48th, 45th...the Democrats outnumber the Republicans by quite a bit.

Dave Reichert: Lamest Duck in Congress. Screw you, Eastside... you get NOTHING!!! (except the Sonics).

okay i haven't read all the responses to the original here, but i work in the elections services office for king county (i have been working on the phone bank since mid-october and this week have been moved up to the 5th floor which believe me has been all abuzz) - and my not so humble opinion is that BURNER CONCEDED TOO FUCKING EARLY - they only reason she did so was because the m-f'in AP called the election in reichert's favor - check it out for yourselves at the Secretary of State's site: http://vote.wa.gov/elections/general/Turnout.aspx
as of now (5:26 p.m. as i write this from the ballard library) there are 107,000 votes to be tabulated between king & pierce counties...

at work there are teams of people working on the provisional ballots (in the admin bldg.) and there are scads more down at "TEA" (the temporary elections annex, located next to boeing field) working on absentee ballots - there are approximately TWELVE THOUSAND provisional ballots alone in king county which are being gone through (it's an EXTREMELY laborious and time-hogging process)plus all the absentees which have to go through a signature verification before they even get passed along to get counted.

i just had to get that out. there are SO MANY MORE ballots to be counted...and when burner decides to pull this dumbass move, all it does for us working the phone lines for KC Elections is have us trying to answer to tons of upset/angry people who voted absentee or provisionally who think that their votes now won't be counted...i'm fucking PISSED OFF beyond BELIEF at all the AP and the local media who are making this sound like the election has been decided.
THE ELECTION HAS NOT BEEN DECIDED.

i say SHUT UP AND LET THE VOTES BE COUNTED. it might be a slow process, but we're doing all we can to make sure that EVERYONE'S votes get counted.

ahhh. much better. anyone in ballard up for a glass of wine now?

Hmmm. Time to redistrict, methinks ...

oh, and speaking of nothing, Texas now has zero sway in the House and Senate, thanks to redistricting before.

Um, jez, I know you're an insider and all, but you're asking for a 5000 vote swing among about 15-30K ballots. That's a lot to ask, especially when the ~200,000 ballots already counted amount to 51-49 Reichert.

She did the right thing, and sure she looks dumb if by some stroke of luck the final 20,000 ballots go 13000 to 7000 in her favor, but honestly, given the trend of the 200,000 ballots we have already seen, what are the odds of that?

Simmer down and get real.

For all of you criticizing Darcy I have this to say. NO ONE wanted this race. Darcy reqruited herself - fundraised a lot of money (beating Reichert by a lot) and presented an honest campaign to the voters. She has softend Dave up and she'll be back. Don't bad mouth her. She stood up after 2004 when no one was willing.
