There could still be recounts and challenges, but the presumption of victory has gotten the GOP where they are today. The grownups are in charge now.

Youth turnout made the difference. see http://www.musicforamerica.org/ and http://rawstory.com/news/2006/Young_voters_increase_turnout_aid_D_11082006.htmlfor all the details, but here's the summary

- destroying previous young voter turnout records, breaking the 1982 turnout record by 2 percentage points. (About 2 million votes) Although all the numbers aren't yet in, young voters voted 2-1 for change and likely had a huge impact in electing a democratic congress.

- Exit polls showed that voters between the ages of 18 and 29 cast 13 per cent of all votes, up from 11 per cent in the 2002 elections, the last non-presidential national election.

- That increase is important because the proportion of young voters has become smaller in the same time period, causing the increase to outpace the growth in turnout among all voters, Rock the Vote said.

- Young voters traditionally favour Democratic candidates and did so by a 22 point margin on Tuesday, the organization said, citing exit polls.

Let me be the first (well, probably not even close) to credit Dan Savage with single-handedly restoring the Dems to legislative power! If we win in '08, I think it's pretty obvious why.

Hell, if Richard Gere can claim to speak on behalf of the entire world, so can I. As someone from many, many miles away, but like the rest of the world, intrinsically bound up in the politics of the US, praise Jebus for all you hardworking lefties who swung this around.
