…the Iraqi people want the U.S. to exit their country. And most Iraqis now approve of attacks on U.S. forces, even though 94% express disapproval of al-Qaeda.At one time, this was primarily a call by the Sunni minority, but now the Shiites have also come around to this view. The survey by much-respected World Public Opinion (WPO), taken in September, found that 74% of Shiites and 91% of Sunnis in Iraq want us to leave within a year. The number of Shiites making this call in Baghdad, where the U.S. may send more troops to bring order, is even higher (80%). In contrast, earlier this year, 57% of this same group backed an “open-ended” U.S. stay….
Support for attacks on U.S. forces now commands majority support among both Shiites and Sunnis.
But we’re going to stay—because our president says we can only lose if we leave. And the Dems can do is make vague calls for gradual troop reductions—and not now, but in “four to six months.” When, you know, things will be… better? No, probably worse. Says Atrios :
The basic content of what Obama is saying, divorced from the larger debate, is fine, but as to how it plays in the current debate it’s not fine. It allows us to wait around one more Friedman [a “Friedman” is a six month period]… and then something will happen. Except it won’t happen. Troops will not start coming home 4-6 months from now. And, most likely, 4-6 months from now Obama won’t be saying “bring them home now,” though I’ve put him on my little calendar and will make sure to check back then and let you know.
And, yes, I realize that this is all my fault.
People are just so fraking stupid. They’re simply not capable of seeing someone else’s point of view.
Look, I despise the Republicans and the crimes they’ve committed against this country and the world, but that doesn’t mean I want the Chinese to invade and force regime change. Can you imagine Jenna and Barbara Bush dying in a shoot out with the Chinese occupation army then having their pictures all over TV? Or Bush being pulled out of his “spider hole” to face trial? What about occupation army supply lines blown up by insurgents from West Seattle?
It sounds crazy, but the American people would consider you a traitor if you didn’t fight against an American occupation, so why in the hell can’t they understand why the Iraqis don’t want us there?
Ask vets about it: most of them think we should have left 1-2 years ago.
It's this interesting concept of "We will step down, when the Iraqis step up". Well, they have. They have stepped up from the grass roots up, it may be disordered, but this continual groundswell is an entire nation stepping up and wanting its sovereignty back.
I love how redeployment is now akin to surrender in public debate thanks to the right.
Tactical redeployments and retreats are some of the most powerful moves a military can make. This "never retreat" military ideology has been the downfall of how many of the world's one-time great armies?
It seems so blindingly clear that our best move right now is to fall back to defensible positions in Kurdistan and Kuwait, and swoop in when we need to accomplish specific focused goals. If we get even a little bit lucky, we can finally put some harm on the Iranians in Iraq if they clumsily attempt to assert authority after our falling back.
Good points, Golob. But we also need to do it as a formal NATO handover in Kurdistan, so that they don't focus on the US troops.
NATO is tricky because of Turkey, right?
I have seen a few analytic pieces claiming the Turks have warmed to the idea of a Kurdish state, both as a buffer and a relief valve for their own domestic Kurdish nationalism. On the other side, would the Kurds accept a Turkish military presence?
Still, I could not agree more than if we continue in Iraq, it needs to be under multi-national control, even if just provide us with a fig-leaf.
I think the Turks are finally starting to realize that however much they fear a Kurdish state, it's nothing compared to the horror over the next hill.
If we pull back as you suggest we must first immediately reverse our policy of not issuing visas to Iraqis, in order to enable as many as possible of them to escape that hellhole. The entire middle class needs to get out before they're slaughtered like chickens. We fucking OWE them.
