Stranger (News Dept.) Suggests

posted by on November 27 at 12:37 PM

Don’t forget: This Thursday at 6pm at the Downtown library on 4th and Madison, there’s a public hearing on an FCC proposal to lift the cap on the number of media outlets a single company can own.

And after suffering thru those hearings, why not come to Fremont for the Fremont Toast that follows the Lenin Lighting on Friday at 5 pm? The Toast is when a bunch of the local bars in Fremont will have people to accept your gracious donations (yup, tax deductible) to Fremont's arts community?

What better way to celebrate or commiserate than to down a pint of lager or cider or whatever?

I've heard Lenin's nose glows after Santa gets thru with him ...

Get there early. Listen to co-chair Frank Blethen rail against the dangers of media consolidation and too much power in the hands of too few. Then watch as he tries to single-handedly bring down the P-I and repeal the estate tax. A true man of the people!

Haha, got class again. Thus, when two companies own all our media, you and I can thank the UW English department :P

Well, of course. The UW English department is where most of our baristas come from.

"The hearing will begin at 6pm with opening statements from hearing
organizers, the Commissioners and Congressman Inslee. Then invited
testimony will begin. The order of testimony (subject to tweaking!) will be as follows:

* Jean Godden, Seattle City Council
* Mike Fancher, Seattle Times
* Diane Lachel, Tacoma Click
* John Sandifer, AFTRA
* Robert Jeffrey, Colors NW
* Joel Kelsey, Consumers Union
* Mai Ngyuen, Minority Executive Directors Associatioin
* Clayton Park, King County Business Journal
* David Groves, WA State Labor Council"

After these speakers, it's my understanding the floor will then open for comments from the public, limited to two minutes per person.

I'm surprised there are any limits left.
