The stumbling monk is great for reading. And their beer kind of tastes like candy. And is twice-to-three times as alcoholic as ordinary beer.
Speaking of reading in bars, whatever went down at your interview with Heidi Julavits?
Christopher,
Jeebus H Christ -reading in bars?
And people wonder why we Seattleites have such a nasty, chilly reputation.
I just went to Honolulu and had a fantastic time at Hula’s where I was amazed how friendly and approachable everyone was. I had the same pleasantly surprising experience at the Abbey in LA of all places.
Going somewhere that’s ostensibly a social outlet, like a bar, to read a book is just rude. Do you give people dirty looks or act like they don’t exist when they smile and try to make conversation?
Libraries should serve alcohol.
the best bars are of the old school variety, with a wide assortment of barflies bellied up to the bar, quietly nursing their drinks and pondering the great complexities of life.
the sorts of places where bourbon with milk isn't unheard of and the jukebox isn't blaring. dim, hazy light, real highball glasses, and salted nuts that, in spite of their obvious staleness, taste delicious.
they are the perfect places to read, even with the unforgiving light. these sorts of bars are few and far between in seattle anymore, having lost out to places that practically demand social interaction with other patrons.
it is a shame. the art of drinking quietly by oneself is nearly gone. but, christopher, try redwood on a mid-afternoon or the lava lounge during the day. both are very conducive to drinking and reading.
Seriously. Why shouldn't people be able to be served alcohol while reading?
What everybody's trying to say but not knowing how is that the Stumbling Monk sells Belgian (and Belgian-style) beers. If you don't know Belgian beer, you'll probably either love it or hate it, but it's not likely that you'll recognize it (unless maybe it's a golden or a white; those are lighter and there are a couple nationally-distributed Belgian whites). Some of it is really strange. Most of it is deee-licious.
I used to read in bars all the time. This made me wonder why I don't anymore - but Kerri's post laid it out there. There are so few bars left that are conducive to reading, or any other internal-focus activity.
I'm so amused that poster Andrew seems to be affronted at the notion of reading in a bar. How dare someone go out in public and not want to mix n' mingle!
