The best thing that could happen to all professional sports teams is to repeal the rule that forbids municipal ownership of sports teams. It was put in place after Green Bay bought the Packers.

I was really disgusted when I saw the "Save Our Seahawks" signs and bumper stickers, because we weren't voting to keep "our" Seahawks here. We were voting for or against a corporate welfare deal. If we owned the Sonics, Mariners, and Seahawks outright and were receiving a profit from them, I might be more inclined to keep them around.

Is it really even possible for the Portland/Seattle train ride to be only 1 hour?

Right you are, Charles.

Besides, Paul can always build them a new stadium on Mercer Island or just over the eastern 90 if he wants public money.

Here, in Seattle, we want real investments, not tax subsidies for sports teams.

Except the Huskies (that's state anyways)

The Blazers have Garfield/UW's Brandon Roy, Seattle Prep's Martell Webster, and Mr. Sonic Nate McMillan is their head coach. Also, like the Sonics the Blazers stink, so there really isn't that much of an adjustment. Plus, if the team makes an insane demand for the public to fix the Rose Garden, we won't have to pay for it.

Yeah, but Portland's got pro lacrosse; when are we gonna get some of THAT?

The Shinkansen bullet train averages 175 mph -
Portland is 145 miles away...

Will it be built here? Probably not...

I really think an NHL team would do well in Seattle. Could even keep the Arena pretty much as-is.

Gitai - I could sell you some packer stock if you want to join the NFL owners club ;p

and as for NHL, i would be ALL OVER THAT. I say send the penguins here. Not only would we get an NHL team, but we could also get the added bonus of taking away one of Pittsburgh's pro teams.

I'll third the request for NHL hockey in seattle. I'm in line for season tickets on the glass already.

It's my understanding that Key Arena does not currently meet NHL requirements, though I think it has more to do with size/layout issues than winner-take-all financial models like the NBA demands.

In any case, T-Birds hockey games at Key Arena are totally fun and CHEAP! Hard to beat 4 tickets for $40, which they frequently offer. Plus they drop prizes on the spectators from a remote control blimp. And the players fight more, being the scrappy young whippersnappers they are. You should go! GO T-BIRDS!

Explorer is correct - IIRC, when the Coliseum was remodeled into Key Arena, the floor level was lowered, such that a hockey rink only fits if you take out all the seats on one end. OK for the T'birds, but not for the NHL.

However, my concern re: the NBA is - are we all just going to roll over for Paul Allen again, if he wants to move the Blazers here? Or, is he really going to pony up for his own NBA arena?

Maybe Paul Allen can trade the Trailblazers for the Sonics. I just don't want Sue Bird to leave town. She's a cutie!

When has Paul Allen ever fully paid his own way for an economic development/business scheme around here?

I guess it just kills me that there his pro HOCKEY in the DESERT but not in seattle, which is a stones throw away from canada. vancouver bc is too far away to go to a game on a weeknight, which is what i would have had to do to see my red wings play last night.

Hockey and Pro Lacrosse would be good. Though the latter would prob last 2 seasons, max. This here is no steeped Midwest to New England sweep o' land. Next time you get bored at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, you might be able to slip out and happen on the Northeastern/ UNH game across the street.

NHL Hockey - perfect use of Key Arena!

So long as they don't want any underperforming "investments" in the team.

HereThere:

Don't shinkansens run on dedicated tracks with few or no crossings? I would imagine the expense of building such a line between Seattle and Portland would be astronomical.

Actually, just from the savings in shipping high-tech equipment (like wind turbines, computer chips, avionics, etc) you could easily pay for building a high-speed rail line.

Remember, rail uses less than 1/20th as much energy as air travel, but takes about as much time if designed well.

They do it all over in China, Japan, Europe, etc.

That's definitely one reason... Even LA to Seattle, with stops at major cities wouldn't likely see enough use to warrant the expense. In Japan there are the high speed trains, which make few stops and the "local" Shinkansen which make more stops. They don't travel as fast - but still a damn good rate of speed. They're used constantly. It's all about the density, AND dedication...

The current WSDOT plan calls for getting the SEA-PDX trip on Amtrak down to 2 hours 30 minutes. With a 110mph maximum speed, it aint the bullet train, but it will be about the best you can get operating on a operational freight line.

The real laggard in creating a high speed regional rail line is BC. It will be truly embarrassing for Canada when tourists on their way to the Olympics are bumping along at 10 mph on the terrible track through White Rock & Surrey.

They've been trying to get SF-LA done for years, and expect another 10 years to be spent in the planning stages, but at least it's being taken seriously (besides taking a recent back seat due to state budget cuts).

It would be amazing, I want it today.

That's cool about WSDOT's plan...
on ViaRail from Montreal to Toronto, 370 miles takes 4 hours 15 minutes with 1 stop so it seems like 2 hours at least is pretty doable. Since it's 6.5 hours by car (even at 140kmh, which as I learned from a highway cop, is metric for $350), it's by far the fastest way to make the trip.
Stupid Amtrak takes a damn 10 hours to go the same distance to NYC. (*angry face*)

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this or not... I'm pretty sure there are rules against owning a NBA team and a NFL team in the same city. So Paul Allen couldn't just move the trailblazers here. But if anyone can find a way around that rule it would be Paul.

Hey Will -

How about you think before you type (wait, did I just ask Will in Seattle to think before he types - that would be like Bush not being stupid....not going to happen)!

Anyways, the Husky Football team that you apparently dispise actually a) pays for itself, and b) pays for all the other sports at UW that can't cover their own costs (like that water polo team you were on back in your slimmer years).
