Mike Jones, Gay American Hero

posted by on November 16 at 14:14 PM

Gay blogger Joe My God is urging all of us to show some love to Mike Jones, the escort who outed Rev. Ted “Meth Head” Haggard.

Regardless of your personal opinions regarding Jones’ chosen field of work, you cannot ignore his unprecedented accomplishment of almost completely upending the Republican Party’s last minute campaign to divert the nation’s attention from the true issue of the election: the Iraq war.

Talking Heads: “The terrorists have just blah blah….gay marriage referendum blah blah….stem cell legislation blah blah…millions of illegal immigrants blah blah. Um, wait a minute. We have a breaking bulletin: Pastor Ted Haggard! Head of evangelical movement! Prostitution! Crystal meth! Close to the President! More! More! More! More!”

Repeat on every channel.

Headlines on every paper.

For five days.

The five days BEFORE the election.

All the billionaire George Soroses in the world could not have more effectively eclipsed the Republicans’ usual last minute diversionary tactics. It was pure delicious serendipity. It was kismet. And most of all, it was KARMA, baby….

I’ve been in contact with Mike over the last week. He tells me that the major gay rights organizations have extended nothing but ten-foot poles. He is unemployed and I imagine that for at least the short future, he is unemployable. He is facing the potential of huge legal bills. He has received death threats from Haggard’s followers and other peace-loving Christians.

Gentle readers, you and I owe Mike Jones a debt of gratitude. It’s a different country than it was seven days ago, and even if you think that Mike Jones had only the tiniest part in effecting that change, we OWE him. Remember those last two Senate seats were decided by just a few thousand votes each.

So please, show your thanks.

Go to PayPal’s Send Money screen and throw some love to our unlikely hero, using his email account: “massageandmuscle@aol.com” …

Send him the $10 you would have spent buying him drinks, if you ran into him in a bar. Send him the $20 you would have spent buying his dinner in a restaurant.

I couldn’t agree more. Send some love—in the form of cash—to Mike Jones. I did.

OK - I did it. $20 for out-Roving Rove? You bet. Plus the dude is frakkin hot.

Hey, at least I got a "massage" for my $$.

Oh, yeah. And the Crank.

I agree that this guy has balls, and I think he did the right thing. This silly idea of a "callboy code of honor" is crap. That "code" should extend as far as not screaming "Girlfriend!" if you see your John and his wife at the local mall, but when a guy is an active enemy of gay rights - and making a damn good living off it - all bets are off.

I'll show him some money.

I have nothing but love for Mike Jones (btw, can somebody please make a youtube video of Jones/Haggard news footage set to a song by hip hop's Mike Jones? Please?), but wasn't this story also a distraction from the Iraq War, albeit a positive one for Democrats? I understand the value of outing hypocritical bigots, but it's still a distraction from America's oily geopolitical adventuring.

You gotta admit, he made a difference.

Even if the replacement guy is a closeted gay.

Did you just say "a gay"? That sounds weird.

Wow - he really is a WHORE!

If you doubted it before, doubt no more.

This guy will do anything for a buck.

A true American. Now all he needs to do is start his own church and maybe he can have a weekly conversation with the President.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Patrick C,

It is precisely because he is NOT a whore now that he finds himself suddenly broke. He sacrificed for us. We should all sacrifice a little for him. He is not asking us to support him, but helping him through this hard time is the right thing to do.

It is the Christian thing to do.

Giving money to Mike Jones is NOT enough. Someone needs to offer him a job so that he can survive in the long run. Anyone out there like David Geffen or similar who can help him out? Please........

I put my money down for this man. If you were asked to make a choice that, if you made it, meant that your whole world would end---your job, your ability to live in the town, your anonymity---but in doing so, it would stop a world-class homophobe in his tracks and keep him from spreading hatred, homophobia and discrimination at an institutional, governmental level---would you do it? That's what Mike did. Your life is better because of what he did. So for the GLBT people dissing Mike, STFU and get your ass over to paypal to help him out as you would want to be helped out, if you did this and found yourself alone and broke and without friends, having done this ONLY to help your community. He didn't do a Paula Jones interview for pay. He did a Mike Jones interview, and now he needs help.

Dan, thank you very much for giving this story more visibility, it's very appreciated.

To Patrick C (above), you should know that it was I who approached Mr. Jones and suggested the PayPal account. He was rather taken aback by my idea, and I think he may have initially suspected that I was yet another person attempting to screw him over. (Insert lame hooker joke: HERE.)

The genesis of my fund idea came when I read that when asked if any gay orgs had offered Jones any support, he had replied, "I'd be happy if they just offered me some peanut butter and some bread." The article went on to describe Jones' dire financial situation.

So here's a guy who has just sacrificed his privacy, his employability, has opened himself up to potential civil lawsuits and criminal charges, and not least of which, has made himself the target of death-threat-sending gentle, loving, followers of Christ.

And for what? Money? From whom? For a better gig? Where? He's probably the least hirable man in Colorado. For fame? He's one of the most reviled men in America and the punchline to every late night talk show joke. He can't even go back to hooking, because as we all know, the number one requirement most johns want from their ho, is anonymity/discretion.

Mike Jones risked everything, quite simply, for US, his gay brothers and sisters. It was a simple act, born out of a local outrage, with no idea what its ultimate national consequence would be.

Mike Jones' hope was that outing Haggard would thwart the local Colorado anti-gay referendum. That didn't happen, it passed anyway. But nationally, the effect of the Haggard story was impossibly, unpredictably, much broader, as even Karl Rove, Darth Vader himself, admitted to Time Magazine, saying, "The profile of corruption in the exit polls was bigger than I'd expected. Abramoff, lobbying, Foley and Haggard added to the general distaste that people have for all things Washington, and it just reached critical mass."

As El Ganador said at the top of these comments, Mike Jones "outroved Karl Rove." even though he probably didn't realize it. Talking to him, I'm not real sure that Mike Jones would have known who Karl Rove WAS, a few weeks ago, quite frankly.

Jones may not have planned it that way, but if we take Haggard out of that mix of corruption that Rove cited, maybe that "critical mass" would not have been reached. I know that I believe it wouldn't have. I have 200 channels and I couldn't go 5 minutes without slamming into another breathless update of the Haggard story, which completely squashed virutally all of the usual Republican base-energizing, diversionary, cynical misdirection.

Hey, I tip my bartender a dollar for moving a bottle of beer two feet across the counter for me. Mike Jones had a hand in moving the entire country for me, his gay brother. And I always tip generously for excellent service.

I'm with Chris. Sure, slip him a $10 or a $20. That'll get him through the month. But what this guy really needs is a future. He needs a job. He just proved his ethics are higher than 80% of corporate America. Surely someone can offer him a job. Then he won't need our charity.

There will undoubtedly be a book deal, an Oprah tour, and movie rights, but that'll all take a while. He needs a job now.

Thanks, Joe. Your elucidation makes sense to me.

There certainly is nothing wrong with helping a guy out who is in a thankless position. I do have some doubts about what it is he accomplished - and how we can measure its impact on an election.

I hope he helped open up some minds rusted shut by hateful evangelist rhetoric. I also hope he didnt inadvertantly give Haggard's fellows more ammo to fuel the "the dark side" BS that homosexuality equates to drugs, prostitution, sickness, secrets and shame.

There are many community organizations that directly help LGBT people that could also use donations.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Democratic Party helped him out in some small way (like a job) for his sacrifices? Even Linda Tripp was treated to a make over by the idiots of the right for her scheming.

Help Wanted.

Replacement needed for our previous reverand

Nice church looking for a honest hardworking reverend who does not like to get his weiner rubbed while wearing a rubber sado-masachistic suit and smoking a crack pipe.

Suitable candidates will need to have 10 years or more of Reverand experience without ever having masturbated to gay porn in the church confessional or wearing a butt-plug while giving a sermon.

Interested candidates call (206)899-9999.

All candidates chosen for an interview must bring a large cucumber to the interview.

Hey, Mike, come to Seattle. We'll hire you. *I* want a massage from a hot gay guy, even if he doesn't swing my way. It's that whole allure-of-the-forbidden thing.

Oh, and thanks for helping get my country back. We really do appreciate it.

I just sent $15, and so should you. Think of it this way, if your favorite rock band puts on a good show, you wouldn't balk at dropping 15 bucks to see it -- Mike Jones precipitated the most entertaining, satisfyingly schadenfreudetastic show of the year! Toss a bill in the tip jar.

Hey Dan!
Why don't you let him MC Gay Bingo in Seattle!? He'd probably do a much better job than you and Mark Finley ever did - and at least he'd be employed :) It sure beats this little publicity-stunt circuit story thing you got going on, wouldn't you say? :)

From a blast from your not so distant past! Don't forget that you do have a past, Dan :)

I would not give that whore one penny. He deserves to be in the position he is in now. He didn't do anything for the Gay community that would help promote our lifestyle. A gay prositute seeing a married man...wanting to stand up for gay marriage...way to BITCH...He is not employable in the US...there are background checks and he just came out and told the world he was a prostitute meth dealer/pusher. He better watch out from all of the other str8 johns he serviced they are not about to sit around and let him destroy their life and families...
